My Diary #182

Dear Tigey,

I’m pretty sure new neighbours moved in above me on Friday, Mar 14. There were cleaning noises a couple of days before that, and then a whole racket for an hour or so with things dragging on the ground, stuff being dropped on the floor, etc. So annoying. That’s standard moving in stuff though and they’ve been pleasantly quiet since then.

Life

I was supposed to go in for work on Thursday afternoon this week, for a team meeting. On top of that, I had seen a potential house that I sort of liked, down by the Heritage Valley neighbourhood, and had asked my realtor for a showing, while inviting Dad along as well, and that date also ended up coincidentally being Thursday, in the morning, before my work meeting.

The house viewing was going to be at 11 am, and would have probably lasted about half an hour, and then my work meeting was at 1 pm to 2 pm at the University. So it’d have been a bus ride back to Century Park, and then the train up north to the University Station.

Note the use of tenses in those paragraphs though, because what happened was that a March snowstorm swung in, so we had a layer of melting snow and rain that froze up, and then a pile of snow on top of that. This was Thursday afternoon at 3:39 pm:

As my parents have said in the past, freezing rain into snow is worse weather than a constantly freezing -30°C or something like that, the ice is treacherous and causes accidents and injuries. So my boss cancelled the in-person team meeting in the morning, and after chatting with Dad, he was ready to go down to see the house anyway if I wanted but we decided to call it off nonetheless.

I chatted with my realtor while cancelling it and he said that the house already had offers and the owners would be looking at said offers on the weekend to make a decision then, and Friday was a no-go either since it was unseasonably cold this week from Thursday all the way through Sunday, so we agreed to just let this specific house go as I wasn’t prepared to make an offer on it anyway — its price was just above my comfort level at 390k and it wasn’t in the perfect location (though it wasn’t too bad) AND I’d have to contend with multiple offers so it might have gone over cost too? It should be interesting to see how much it does eventually sell for though.

Anyway, since everything was cancelled, I stayed at home all day on Thursday instead, and during the period of time where I would have been out at the house viewing, my Harney & Sons tea arrived in a package. I accidentally scared the courier lady because I opened the front door just after she came out of the elevator and was looking for my front door. Oops.

It actually came with those two free sampler packets at the front too, that wasn’t part of my way-too-expensive order. Cool. The tin is very pretty, but the tea inside was just okay, I liked the coconut part of it but one of the other ingredients, either the caramel or the toasted rice/sesame seeds combination, made the tea taste a little weird to me. It might be a case of getting used to it though.

Earlier in the week, I also went down to Southgate Mall and saw that a new store, Winners, had just opened beneath London Drugs in the eastern wing of the mall. They opened on March 10 2025, I believe, according to signage and Southgate‘s Instagram account. This was a large department store, mostly selling clothes and shoes and the ilk, but also with houseware and kitchenware sections, stationery, snacks, and even a small section for teas and spices. I enjoyed walking through it!

On the same day, I also went to Safeway to get groceries, and noticed this new sign that I had never seen before in all my years walking trough it. Weird.

“This section will be undergoing exciting future changes! Thank you for your patience while we work through this.” So is this an excited promise of anticipation, or is it an apology for not having stock to put on the shelf??

I complained a couple of weeks back that the Panache soups that I was going to try on a recommendation from WingBenny were completely gone, but when I went there this week on the 10th they had a couple of flavours back on the shelf. Neither of them were the one I wanted though, but I did notice that one of them was a whopping 75% off, and had one container left, so I picked up that container of Panache Steakhouse Chili (local) for $2.99 instead of its usual $10.49. Good discount. It was on sale I guess because its Best By date was in 6 days, on the 17th, but that was a lot of time for me anyway, and I just split and used it as part of three separate meals and was done with it by the 14th.

I also found a particularly nice secondary sauce to put in my soup from Safeway last week as well. It’s called Ferma Hot Pimento Paste (local), and it goes real well mixed with the miso paste that I use in the soup pot. Mmm. And it was on the discount shelf when I found it and tried it, so it only cost $2.64 instead of its usual $5.29. Mmm.

I’ve contemplated making changes to my monthly ledger spreadsheet to itemize my groceries better and attempt to track not only things like changes in prices, but also things like product weight/volume. Not sure if I’ll decide to put in the extra work for this yet though, we’ll see. I also have a March/April to-do list that is slowly building up over time — I need to get a haircut, do my taxes, re-sign my housing lease, and remove Dad‘s computer from the Backblaze cloud backup service because he doesn’t want me maintaining a second licence to backup his stuff under its current cost structure (though he agrees that I can set up something to back it all up under my own personal licence if/when they move into my future house.)

No sky pictures this week other than the snowy one near the top of this section. Also however, even though the house listing this week was cancelled, we have another house listing to look at next week as well, and this one is right smack at the top of my price range and not terribly far away from my current house, so Dad and I will take a look and see if we like it!

Games

On stream this week was all Suikoden 1 HD Remaster — I’m now 10 streams in and should be done by early/mid next week I think. And then we’ll move right on to Suikoden 2 since the games are linked together (not only installation-wise, but I think the save file from 1 can be imported into 2 ) Fun game, and the story is hilarious in parts, but the inventory/character management system is abysmally bad. Satinel has been a total champ too, supporting me by keeping tabs on a character recruitment walkthrough to try to make sure I don’t miss anyone that can only be recruited within a certain window of time, since not only does (supposedly) the “best” ending in Suikoden 1 involve recruiting all 108 recruitable characters along the way, but having all 108 recruited also (supposedly) affects the save file being brought into the second game.

Off-stream, I played a variety of games, bouncing around from place to place. Some carryovers from past weeks include Backpack Battles, CivIdle, and My Little Universe. Some new ones from this week include W.A.N.D. Project, which is a bullet heaven game where you build your spells/abilities on a grid and improve the grid with roguelite currency between runs, Super Bullet Break, which is a roguelike deckbuilder but that I only played a bit of this week so I can’t give much of an opinion about it, Your Chronicle, which is an idle RPG, and Pacific Drive, which I tried in a previous Steam Next Fest, but which I am not sure I’ll continue playing due to worries about vertigo due to the car shaking from side to side. That and the looting/scavenging mechanic hasn’t been particularly satisfying so far. We’ll see though!

I only played, recorded, and uploaded one demo this week, but have had the urge to do more of these as well during my free time. The one I played was the demo of Am I Nima, a game that was similar to other games like Little Alchemy or Doodle God, but with a psychological story wrapped around it.

I’ve been restless this week though, and we’ll see what the next week holds for me. I did try installing a Minecraft modpack but apparently the Curseforge client is terrible and hates collaboration with everything else, while hoarding a lot of popular modpacks on its platform, so I had to jump through some hoops with MultiMC to get the modpack, Life in the Village 3 (local), onto the Playnite client (local) that I have been testing out and using recently. And then I logged onto the server for the modpack to make sure it works, and got overwhelmed with a crazy number of free items from one of the mods in the modpack, so I logged off in fear. Maybe another night.

Plushie of the Week #177

So this plushie is a confusing one, because it’s a SeaWorld plushie, and SeaWorld has locations in San Diego, San Antonio, and Orlando in the States, and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. None of those locations are places that anyone in the family has ever been to, though, as far as I am aware, yet this plushie was in the family box of plushies from years ago anyway. How did this one swim into our life? What’s his story? Was it a gift from someone? Did we pick it up from another affiliated aquarium? No idea! This is one of the myriad of unknown plushies that we own.

Song of the Week #154

Title: All About That Bass
Artist: Meghan Trainor
Album: Title (2014)

This week’s guest segment is written by WingBenny~ I might have strong-armed him into it. He’s a great person though, and I’m honoured that he agreed to write a segment on my blog, despite the pain. I mean, without further ado, here is his chosen song and the reason it is a meaningful song to him!

There were so many songs to choose from and there are so many songs that mean a lot to me. I finally decided on “All about that Bass” by Meghan Trainor. When this song came out, I loved the music a lot, since I love the pop music genre, and I always enjoy listening to and dancing to pop music when I’m driving. This song stood out to me more compared to others, because of the lyrics, it mentioned body positivity and during that time when it was released, not a lot of songs will talk about that. We are surrounded with “skinny is best” type of culture, so it’s nice to hear something different and a song that suggests, no matter what size you are, you’re good, you’re amazing and no need to worry about what other people say!

Being from Hong Kong, with a traditional Chinese culture, a lot of relatives like to comment about your size and they won’t shy away from body shaming at all. No matter if you’ve gained or lost weight or any changes in size, they will make some sort of comment about it and the majority of them are negative. Therefore, having a song that promotes body positivity is completely different from what I’m used to, which is very nice and refreshing. I enjoy promoting this type of positive message, because I have been on the receiving end of body shaming from someone close to you or from so called ‘family’ members. I like lifting other people up, and just like the song, no matter what size they are, it doesn’t matter, what matters is who they truly are and how they treat other people.

Hopefully this song speaks to you as well and spread that kindness!

I can definitely relate to this, as my parents and relatives do this too, hah. I know it probably comes from a place of kindness to soooome degree, like a way for the older generation to let you know that they have noticed your change which means that they have been paying attention to you, but it can still be very disrespectful at times as it can easily turn into a put-down. And in many cases for different families and other people, they probably DO use it as a put-down for people they look down upon. It’s not just body shape too, since my parents will also make comments about things like how my hair is going grey or white or something. I’m glad their eyesight isn’t as good these days!

Thank you for the writeup! I haven’t actually heard the song before since I stopped listening to the (English) radio in the mid 00’s, but this was a very catchy song.

Memory Snippet of the Week #161

Jah shared this link (local) about a Python-based MUD creation system called Evennia here. I wanted to save this to the blog in particular because a MUD world is something I’ve wanted to make since young. Maybe one day I’ll do something with this. There are a handful of memory snippets linked to this that I wanted to document and share though, in the vein of building projects that I have helped with in various worlds before, so here we are.

Snippet 1

The first memory snippet is that I’ve wanted to create a MUD version of a city, with interconnected rooms representing streets and shops and houses, for a long time now. Why, I’m not exactly sure, but this one is a dream stretching back something like 20-30 years. I’ve always liked the text-based, world-building aspect of a MUD and the ability to conceal descriptions and interactions in the room for people to find if they try to look at or interact with things via text comments in the room (look books, sit chair, and so on).

There was a good chunk of time in my life, somewhere around the early 00’s, where I wanted to make a MUD version of Waterdeep (local), a major city in the Forgotten Realms. Or at least a specific shopping street on the southern part of the city. This would have been very heavily influenced by a MUD called Forgotten Kingdoms (local) that I was playing at the time, and which was mostly set in Waterdeep. I’ve briefly mentioned this MUD before a long time ago in this writeup, and it’s also on my master “massively multiplayer” game list here. You can see from that list that that was a 2001-2003 sort of game, so around that point forward was when I first got interested in that. Because I didn’t know much programming though, I never got anywhere into it besides setting up a MUD codebase that I then did nothing with.

These days, if I were to do something like that, I wonder what I would do instead? Now that I’ve visited Japan and seen their shoutengai, or Japanese shopping streets, maybe something like that with a mystical bent? Or would I try to design an entire town or city instead? Something modern? Cyberpunk? Or back to my magical fantasy roots? It would still ultimately be text though, and not really anything that could be turned into an actual game, but it’s all about flexing and exercising the writing and world-building chops.

Snippet 2

Another memory snippet that I remember is that at one point, I actually fell into friendship with a few people from a MUD who were trying to make their own MUD. I believe I met them when I was playing Forgotten Kingdoms, which from that linked list above and the dates on the files I have saved from that project would date it to around the latter half of 2002. I don’t even remember who exactly the people I was with were anymore, besides Lady Jinx who was very much there as well, but I do remember that the name of the MUD that we were going to make was called Broken Barriers, and that it never really got anywhere.

I have bits and pieces of what people typed up at the time saved in various text fields on the storage drive, and maybe I’ll put together and publish a page of snippets someday, but there was so little of interest here, and I suspect a lot of the things that I do have regardless were references and notes copied out from other books instead of original content, so this was very much in such an early state of development that I feel like I never actually created anything of significance here. Still, my god character there was called Sehanine (local), a minor elven goddess of the Forgotten Realms, and a name that I haven’t heard in a looooong time. Though as god characters, we were builders and not roleplay characters, I did create a room for myself:

This peaceful-looking room would be described by mere mortals as simply breathtaking. The room itself seems to be surreal, the walls, floor and ceiling looking to be made of an insubstantial yellow glow, and seeming to be constantly shifting. In fact, the whole room is constructed from glowing moonrays, constantly flowing in intertwined rivers about the circular room’s contours, and feeling like flowing water when touched, as well as providing all the light this room will ever need. A touch is enough to bend the moonrays, and thus they can be gently kneaded into whatever shape necessary, giving no resistance, and only reforming when the gentle pressure is removed. Piles of lined and graph papers flank the room, showing diagrams of everything from drow cities to underground areas that no mortal has ever set foot on. A closet is cleverly set into the side of the room so much so it almost looks invisible, but is actually chock-full of all sorts of dresses and finery.

Snippet 3

Another snippet is that when I played Medievia, which I have written about here in the past, I also applied for and got a God character there, not to build out a zone but to write Autoquests, which were ingame quests from scrolls that monsters would sometimes randomly drop. These god characters were supposedly heavily monitored, since they had access to tools that could look up items and monsters and data like that that could be abused by actual players trying to get an advanrage, and the quests themselves were done using a custom program that they developed in-house called AQB (AutoQuest Builder, I suppose).

I got tired of the rigidity and layers of security and approvals needed to do anything though so I never stuck around long, but according to my logs, I did end up creating four Autoquests for the game. Their names were: Apples for the Horses, Free the Alicorn, The Ace of Life, and Upgrade the White Knight’s Pike. There were two more either in development or stuck in various stages of submission too: Memories of a Childhood Dream, and Repair the Hives. The program that they provided me to edit them still works, oddly, though the UI isn’t the greatest and it’s hard to read the text that I wrote up for each step in the quests. I should do something with these snippets someday too, but today is not that day.

Snippet 4

This next one is one that I’ve mentioned these in passing inside of another snippet before. I played a MUD called The Gathering… at some point, and wrote them a zone named the Dragondale Sewers, credited to my goddess character named Melyene, where two factions of ratmen, the Severed Ear and the Wounded Paw, were fighting each other. This was a low to middle level zone even though it was situated just below the starting/main town, Dragondale, with a lower level quest to collect rat tails and a higher level option to go in and murder the leaders of both factions.

There was a bunch of simple code in there, written using the ingame scripting system, that created and governed interaction between the various ecologies and factions in the sewers, and I remember being particularly proud of a treasure/junk heap in a corner of the sewers where players could go to and try to dig up a bunch of interesting trinkets from a loot table (but which could also spawn an indignant slime enemy.) That was definitely the MUD zone that I was most proud in building, partly because that was the *only* MUD zone that I had ever built (and have ever built, up till this point anyway).

Snippet 5

Looking back at that MMO/MUD list that I played again, there was one entry near the top called Noble MUD, which I played in Jan-Feb 2002. This one is almost certainly long gone, but as I recall it, the premise was that the players were part of a noble family living in a manor called the Thtakryt Estate, and there was supposed to be some nobility RP within a magical fantasy setting. I liked the idea, but it never took off and I never found anyone there to roleplay with, so I left after a week or two.

However, while I was there, I did design my character, and got to write up her bedroom as well, and I remember this MUD not only because of that, which was rare in the various MUD worlds that I visited, but also specifically because I got complimented for the room and descriptions that I made for my room, though it might also just have been the staff member doing so being nice because there were so few players and they badly needed more new blood. That being said, I saved most of the snippets from this place, so why not toss them in here too? This is me, circa Feb 2002, about five months before I found out that I was transgendered (or rather, found out what it meant):

This was the door entrance to the room:

This smooth silver door is crafted from fine lacquered and well-polished wood, and an intricately designed square-shaped maze is engraved and embossed onto the centre of the wooden frame, the entrances to the maze on top and below, providing idle fingers with something to do. The doorknob is made of a warm golden brass, and turning and pushing it causes the door to swing inward silently.

This was the actual room description:

Shiara‘s bedroom is moderately big, and fully carpeted, with a window directly opposite the door which is on the west wall, and another in the middle of the wall on the south. Both windows have light green curtains with images of flowers embroidered on them, and which are usually drawn shut. In the southeast corner of the room lies a large bed, with a niche cut into the wall and set partway up in the south corner by the bed, and a softly glowing lamp is strategically placed in the niche.

At the foot of the bed and in front of the window is a round table made of smooth, aged wood that has been carefully varnished. Flanking the table on either side are single-seat sofas, and a double-seat sofa rests on the opposite side of the table from the window. In the southwestern corner, immediately to your right when you first walk in, is a rectangular walk-in closet which is bulging with dresses, tunics, pantaloons and the such. Beside that is a chest of drawers, 4 of them in total, all of which are closed right now.

To your left when you come in, next to a lamp placed on a small elegant brass table, is her dresser. A mirror has been placed on the wall, at just the right height for a person sitting in the accompanying velvet-padded stool to view his or her face in. Next to the dresser at the base of the western wall is a closed longchest, twice as long as it is wide, or tall. Next to the dresser on the northern wall is a fireplace, with a rug spread out beside it, and beside that is a large bookcase, filled with books she apparantly peruses once in a while. Lastly, in the northeastern corner is a series of desks lined up against each other, with a smaller lamp again placed right in the corner. The desks and tables in total have well over ten drawers, and are also scattered with papers of all sorts. The ceiling is covered with a thin layer of glassy material, and you realise with a start that you can see through to the sky above, although the room is nowhere near the top of the estate….

{+views available, type ‘+view here’, then ‘+view here/<item>}

These were some of the items that could be +viewed in the room:

Dresser: Besides the mirror mounted on the wall just above the dresser, the dresser also has 3 drawers on its right side which can be pulled open. The first drawer contains hairbrushes and combs of different types, a nail trimmer, a metal file, a small pair of scissors, a small dagger, a small flask of oil… The second drawer contains mainly bottles of perfume and the such, which she doesn’t use very often but figures would be good to have around. The third drawer contains various accessories, several hairpins, hair ties, and several types of rings, bracelets, ringlets and more. Although none of them look like they’re very expensive, all of them look reasonably valuable.

Bed: The bed consists of a large, thick but soft mattress and a thinner spare one below it, lying on top of a square bed frame. The frame does not have any headboards, but has 4 ornate carved bedposts with round knobs on the very top. It is piled with quite a few plush light blue, pink, green and purple and various other light-coloured cushions, as well as three large comforters. All the cushions, comforters, and even the bed itself are stuffed with soft feathers of all types, from long stiff ones to fluffy ones. There is nothing at all under the bed, although there is enough space under there to house a person lying down. The niche where the oil lamp is is cut into the wall itself, and is just a small cubical area big enough to hold the lamp. On a closer inspection, you see a dagger lying at the base of the lamp, perhaps within reach of whoever is lying down on the bed.

Bookcase: This smooth varnished wooden bookcase is quite huge, stretching across half of the room. Its four shelves hold quite a multitude of books, standing upright or piled on top of each other, although certain sections of the bookcase are still empty, perhaps for future use. The books look well-dusted, and are of many different topics, astronomy, various forms of magic, history, and many other varied selections, mostly reference books. (+views are visible here, by typing +view bookcase, also type ‘GET BOOK’ to generate a random book title)

Table: This round table is made of fine varnished wood, and painted a soft marble colour. It currently lies below the windowsill, with a width that spans the entire window, so that the two single sofas are placed over to either side of the window as opposed to in front of the window itself. This allows any people seated there to have a good view out of the window without anyone noticing them. Just below the main surface of the table is another smooth surface, spanning the width of the three table legs too, where items can be placed, although there is nothing there right now. On the table proper is a bowl of juicy fruit.

Ornaments: There are many ornaments of art and interesting items lying about the room, and you can examine a random one by typing “Art”. Try it!

Closet: This is a walk-in closet, with two parallel poles running along the length of the closet at head height and parallel to the floor, to hang clothes on. Both poles are chock-full of hangers, some occupied and some still empty, with all manners of dresses, thick and thin, blouses, skirts, gowns and other types of outerwear. Several piles of neatly folded shirts and trousers line the floor, hidden under the draping lengths of some of the dresses. At the back of the closet, in the far corner and hidden in the shadows, is another pile of items, bags and ornaments, some wrapped, some unwrapped. To look at a random one, type “Art2”. Try it!

Chest: This is a jewelled coffer of chased silver, depicting wooded scenes with birds in branches on back and sides. The top of the coffer is graced by an engraving of a maiden combing hair while looking into a pool at her reflection.

Here are some book examples.

Book 1: This red book is entitled “Heraldry over the Ages” on its spine. It looks like a relatively new book, with slightly bent pages, and a quick flip through the book shows the portrait and history of several major family crests, as well as the symbolism of everything from the phoenix to the cinquefoil to the splendour to the gouttes that may be found on different crests.

Book 2: This book is bound in old yellow leather, secured with a buckle in front, with faded and crinkled pages of differing sizes making up the substance of the book. Carefully opening the cover will allow you to find a range of spell formulaes and magical symbols, notes on magic in general and how to create spells. None of the spell formulaes actually work, unfortunately, but parts of them may be invaluable references in actual spells, and some of the notes could easily strike off a philosophical debate, although the book in general is obviously written by what would be considered a lunatic, due to the ridiculousness of some of the ‘created’ spells here, but hey…

Book 3: A thick tome of dull grey, with an equally thick spine, you open it to find an equally dull topic to most people…it’s a dictionary! With listings of all words from ‘A’ to ‘Zyzzyva’, it’s a handy addition to any booklover’s collection…a quick and easy way of finding the definition of a convoluted word in say, a lunatic’s spellbook…

Book 4: You slide this large-sized but relatively thin (an inch) black and gold book out from underneath a pile of books, and open it. Inside, you find general maps of the Empire and parts of most of the other charted lands…as well as detailed maps on each particular important area within the empire, for example the provinces and major cities. Some of the pages are well-used, and a faint circle can be seen around Shusblem and a nearby small city, and an arrow along the major road connecting them heading in the direction of Shusblem.

Book 5: You lift this musty old cardboard box out from it’s niche on a shelf. Opening it, you find it piled high aged yellow, as well as several newer-looking, hand-drawn maps of old castles, towns, and various other locales and types. Most of them are folded and creased across the map, and a couple of them look as though they’re about to fall into several pieces.

And then there were a bunch more shorter one or two line descriptions for those ornaments and art objects. My notes were full of well-defined clutter! What was I doing back when I was 18? But anyway, something like this is what I want to do but on a larger scale. For no reason other than to drive and satisfy my imagination.

Oh, and this was my character description. It’s a lot shorter. Relatively speaking.

Before you stands a lady in her late teens, with shoulder length blonde hair which blends in with her pale white skin, and which bobs around when she nods.. She has light bluish eyes with perhaps a tinge of green in them, and is usually ready with a friendly smile. She isn’t very tall, standing at about 5’2″ in height, and with a nice, slender figure to boot. She seems charming if a little shy and quiet, especially in public, and looks like the type that hates to be the centre of attention.

(OOC note: do +views on me, I did that to shorten the overall desc.)

The +views were:

Dress: She is adorned in a light blue winter dress, made of layers of silk, and petticoats made of wool under the skirt. It has a neckline that starts just below her collarbone, and which dips slightly in the middle, revealing her neck and a little of her shoulders. The part of the dress above her waist hugs her curves closely, while below her waist the extra layers of wool cause the dress to billow out a little, ending a few inches above her ankles at most. Two pockets, one on either side, are just hidden in the folds of her dress just below her waistline. The sleeves of her dress are also made up of several layers of silk, and the fabric clings to her arms from her shoulders down to halfway between her elbows and wrists. From there, the sleeve starts to widen, ending at her wrists, where the cuffs are about twice as wide as is necessary for her.

Boots: She is wearing a soft black pair of black heeled suede boots, reaching almost halfway up her calves, with a zip running up the length of the instep of each boot, concealed by a length of snap-on buttons that cover up the teeth of the zip.

Scarf: Around her neck is a long, thick light blue scarf, the two ends of the scarf flowing down over her shoulders to end halfway down her torso, which she can clutch and pull around herself if she so wishes. The scarf is made from a couple layers of fine, seemingly expensive fur, and is wrapped one and a half times around her neck.

I lied though, the actual reason I did my clothing as +views was not because I wanted to make it shorter, although that’s also a plus, but because I wanted to write a bunch of clothing descriptions and swap them in and out depending on the day and my mood, and it was easier to do that by just changing individual +view texts rather than my overall description. Thankfully, I never got around to writing up all that. Seriously, what was I doing back when I was 18?

Snippet 6

This snippet is also one that I’ve mentioned before — there was a time when I took part in a room design contest for a newly-opened municipal library in a MUSH called Winter’s Edge, and I won that so they used my description for tthe room. That one I started writing the book and other in-game lore articles for though, so I was quite proud of my creative work there as well.

Snippet 7

When I went back to Medievia for my final stint, which would have placed this snippet around August 2005, I joined a clan called Keepers of the Black Chamber.(Clan 35). The clantown at the time apparently needed a redesign, so our clan leader, Zhouxiaoyu, who I know now as Tes, assigned me and a fellow clan member named Aydria to write it. So I helped design that zone too, although it wasn’t a solo effort and I have no idea how much of the zone I did and how much she did.

Once we had both gone inactive later that year in October though, Tes did an amazing thing — he walked around the clantown and recorded down all the room descriptions, and looked at all the mobs and wrote down all their descriptions as well, and then sent it to us to preserve the work we had done. I mentioned this when I touched base with him again a year and a half ago, and he is the sole reason that I have a copy of the zone and all the descriptions — heck, he’s the reason any of that even exists anymore at all. I appreciated him so much for that.

I haven’t actually posted this log yet — I should probably do so for posterity at some point, but if you think that Nobles MUD snippet above was long, this one would be like 20 times its size since it’s a walking log and involved back and forth travel between rooms with ASCII maps too. I’ll make a separate page for it sometime!

Snippet 8

I’ve also done a couple of non-in-character scripting projects related to MUDs before, one being the Sigma Iota Nu one mentioned here where I scripted up a roster/online status program for them, another being Medievia where I wrote up a quick app using a scripting language in the MUD client itself that we used, to be able to access and search my item database in a local Excel file to find out where an item could be located in-game, and the third in a MUD called Achaea, where I wrote up some scripts to protect myself from thievery and also to help with tournament duels or something. Both of which were not only allowed but encouraged. None of the latter two examples were ever very complex though, they’re just here as footnotes. The first one though, that school roster, was a little more complex as it pulled a bunch of data from different player objects and displayed them in a neat table. I was proud of that one too.

Anyway, game/world/room/event design, especially in the realm of writing descriptions and scripts for it, has been a part of my life in various ways for quite some time now! And that’s why the link that Jah pointed out this week sounded so interesting to me.

Dreams
Mar 10 2025
  • A crazy TV personality and his cameraman came to our street when we were living at our Edmonton 4012 house to look for mischief that he could cause. He hit our car, which was parked out front in front of our garage, and then realized that the door to the car was unlocked so he got in. Somehow he managed to start up the car, and he reversed into the driveway of the neighbour across the road, then out into the road again, then reversed into the yard of the neighbour next to that one.
  • I was watching all this from my own yard and I yelled at him to stop. He laughed at me. The car acquired a dent due to all of that reckless driving and I yelled at him to fix it. He put some brown plaster over the dent and told me that it was good as new, all I had to do was put a fresh coat of blue paint over it to match the car’s colour.
  • I went down to our basement to get Mom and Jon to come up and witness the damage as well. This took a while, and by the time we got up again, the TV personality had also vandalized the car belonging to the neighbour across the road, and was working on the neighbour to our left — he had broken apart their garage entirely and pulled their car out onto our front yard, and then chopped the car up into slices like a pound of barbecued pork.
  • The neighbours also came out around that time, just as the TV personality finally got bored and left with his henchman. They were dismayed to see the state of their car, and I told them that I would be filing a report with the police the next day. I asked for the phone numbers of both my neighbours and we exchanged phone contacts so that I could let them know once I filed the reports and ask them if I needed more information from them while doing so.
  • Snippet: Eileen came by with a notebook and asked for context around a note that she had made 11 years ago. It mentioned me and had a reminder to perform a task with a program, but not the actual task itself, and she had no idea what it meant or if it were still relevant. I recognized the context and pulled up an email exchange we had back then, which I said I had happened to be looking through that morning as well. It was from a span of time when we were emailing each other like penpals. She pored through the five or so relevant emails in the chain before finally figuring out what the note was about.
  • Snippet: There was a green game board that I was looking at from above that represented a portion of a forest or grassland. It had a river running down the middle of the board, and a bridge crossing it. Some event triggered a number of creatures to appear on the map and they were all trying to cross the river from the left side to the right. I had a button that would temporarily summon a second bridge along the river, and I did so to allow more animals to cross at the same time.

  • I took part in a virtual car race as part of a game or event, where I controlled a car and had to outrun pursuers to reach a finish line in one piece. I managed to complete this in one go, although at the very end I almost didn’t make it because I glanced off of some car and spun in a circle on the road. However I was next to the finish line at that point and my car was pointed toward it when it stopped spinning, so I pressed forward a little more and crossed the line.
  • My final score for that game was 83%, and 80% was needed to pass the stage, so I was happy about it, since I had completed it blind on my very first try. I was particularly proud of my reaction when a chasing cop car had shot a homing missile at me, and I had realized what was happening and ducked behind another car for cover so that that car took the brunt of the missile instead.
  • There were two other successful high scores on the list, and both of them were higher than me, but both players had taken multiple tries to complete it. One of them was someone who was standing next to me outside of the game, he had gotten 86%. I considered my score to be “better” than theirs though so I decided to keep it.
  • The part of the dream outside of the game also had a plotline about me and a couple other people being at an office or similar place, but with many other people who were supposed to be there not actually being present that day.
  • Snippet: There was a part of a dream with a top-down resource collection game as well, where there were three different resource node types that I needed to collect resources from, and each node produced a common and a rare resource. I could lock a node to be on or off, and off nodes would not produce any resources at all, but I couldn’t influence or lock it to produce only the rare or the common resource.

  • Snippet: I was playing a hexagonal grid-based board game where I had to lay down hexagonal pieces over a grid space to upgrade it, and the one thing I remember from it is that it had nearly identical pieces for “single repeat” and “endless repeat”, both of which would cause the effect on the tile it was placed on to fire. However, for some reason the endless repeat ones were only firing once each time and then stopping. I eventually found out that this was because I had to do a quest to unlock the endless repetition on those cards, which itself needed a tile effect to be repeated many times to unlock. Thankfully I had a personal repeat card that worked even without the endless version being unlocked, and I put that there, which did the trick.
  • Snippet: I was in a labyrinth with a party of other heroes, the maze had a bunch of rooms in it and all those rooms gave upgrades. Some were combinable into bigger upgrades, some had limits to how strong they would be, and there was a whole metagame around them as I tried to find the “best” upgrades and passed by the ones that I didn’t think would help. Eventually at the end of the labyrinth was a godlike boss that we had to fight.
  • Snippet: Later on I was in a departmental store that sold games, and I was wandering through that section while waiting for Jon to arrive. I was very tempted by some Crab and Phoenix clan L5R boxes that looked likely to be from the TCG version instead of the CCG version. They were large, green boxes that sold for about $25 to $30 each, and I felt like they would be a good investment as their price would be likely to rise soon since they were rare and out of print. I showed one of the boxes to Jon when he arrived.

  • I joined an “alliance” school club or group that consisted of about 20 boys and girls. This club was, among other things, loosely based around a MUD that I had apparently played many years ago, and they had a Patreon account where you could read the latest month’s meeting notes for free, whereas past ones, like 77 months worth of them, were locked behind a paywall that cost $36 a year for a Tier 1 subscription, and $70 a year for Tier 2. I paid the Tier 2 one at first before deciding to save some money and go down to a Tier 1 suhscription.
  • We also had in person club meetings, and those were led by a female teacher or advisor who sat at the front of the classroom. She would announce a song, and then a guy that I was acquainted with would select a record from a large digital list to play on a record turntable that was set about three rows back from the teacher, and play it as a backing track. The backing track was for other people in the club that would either play their own instruments, sing, or even recite poetry to the song. Despite the selection beting digital, he could still scratch the record like a DJ at a club to produce a back-and-forth rhythm.
  • Because he was new to the club though, there was one time where he was caught off guard and had to scramble to try to search for the disk and song. The teacher and a couple other people laughed gently at him, and one or two older students brought out their own portable turntables with physical records of the song to help play it too.
  • My class even had a quiz afterwards on the event, with the teacher/advisor asking us to make a transcription of the poetry that was recited, figuring out what was said and where the inflections and pauses were. There were also a bunch of other word game problems on the quiz. When the test results were handed back, most of the people in the class scored a 60%, but I scored a 100%, which allowed me to catch up and even overtake the previous frontrunner in the class on aggregate grades.

  • Snippet: I walked across a land that “unfolded” around me in a radius as I walked, but there were creatures in the land that I still needed to unlock, although I could nonetheless see them as I walked around. I remember in particular what seemed to be a red snake, made up of a yarn-like material, that was a little shorter than my height and bounced up and down in front of me.

  • Mom and I went to visit a shrine behind the base of our apartment building. We had to walk past an apartment on the first floor of the building itself, set into the void deck, where we could see an old woman washing clothes in a sink. Also outside that apartment was an abandoned food counter and a dim sum steamer display case with trays where it was implied that steamed buns were stored when the counter was in service. It hadn’t been used in years though. I told Mom that I had never seen this stall open before even though I had lived here for years, and she suggested that we take a longer route this time to try to avoid this area in case of awkward interactions. We walked out toward the shrine, though we actually overshot it at first and had to double back to it since it was just a nondescript wooden roadside shrine that was easy to miss.

Dream 1

  • I was part of a team of 6 ready to represent DoMH at a LotRO raid tournament. It was our kinship’s first entry, and we had two tanks, two DPS, and two healers. The tournament involved us facing five waves of monsters one after the next, and we needed to survive and defeat them all, earning points for each wave along the way. I remember Belegil was there as one of the tanks and Nak was there as one of the DPS. I was one of the two healers.
  • We lined up for registration at the venue an hour early, so we were the first group in line. But even after the registration desk opened, it took forever for the attendants to get their forms in order to check us in. I noted that the time we spent getting here early and then waiting for an hour in line had been completely wiped out by the wait. They processed our forms right after that and let us in though.
  • Two attendants then led us off to a room. One of them was filling in another form and asked if we knew what Belegil‘s real name was, as he had gone off to the washroom once we arrived at the room. I said it would be better to ask him so as not to break privacy, but I did a search for “Belegil” in my email anyway to see if he had used his real name before in email correspondence, and it seemed to be Elwillth. That felt wrong so I didn’t offer up the name.
  • The attendant also cheerily gave us a hint that the fight would be very tank-heavy. I thought of ways we could optimize the tank skill rotation and decided to propose that we went a little slower at the end of the next round to make sure the tanks had time to pop their defence buffs before we killed the last mob in a wave and cause the next wave to spawn.
  • The fight itself was still some ways away though. The side room that we were led off to was like a ballroom with tiered stadium seats on both sides of the room and an empty space in the middle. There were about two dozen people in the room, mostly friends and guildmates, and I was surprised that so many people had come out to see us, considering that even though the annual tournament had been going on for a long time, and we were a fairly good raiding guild, this was our first entry in it.
  • We mingled with the people in the room for awhile before I retreated into a side room that turned out to be a bathroom with a shower in it.
  • Later on, just before the raid event started, we were told to stand on six circles in the middle of the room, with two front ones for the tanks, two middle ones for the DPS, and two back ones for the healers. Those circles apparently would slowly recharge our gear.
  • There was also a looting component where we started off with only a bit of gear but would get a bunch more from the monsters that we killed, and had to decide what gear to keep on the fly and how to fit it into our inventory so that they synergized with each other, just like in Backpack Battles. Nak didn’t like his initial item and wondered if he could trade it in for the Crossblades from Backpack Battles, and I told him he had nothing to lose by asking the attendants about it.
  • Lastly, we had to roll five starting passives out of everything that we had grinded out and unlocked as players outside of the tournament, and I was worried because it was random enough that it was possible that I didn’t roll any healing passives, which would have made things a lot more difficult. We were allowed five rerolls, however, and on my final reroll I rolled my healing bonus passive, which I had levelled all the way to +85%, so I was happy about that as it made a big difference in healing output.

Dream 2

  • Firstly, there was a scene of four people driving somewhere in a car. The actual driver of the right-hand drive car was steering with one hand while haphazardly looking backwards and leaning back over his seat at the person in the back left seat, who was poring over a map in both hands. The camera panned from the driver, showing him not paying attention to the road in front of him, down to his feet to show them positioned on the accelerator and brake pedals.
  • Later on, the scene shifted to a high-rise apartment. We had an in-person team meeting there but Ronnie ended it early, and when Johannes asked why we didn’t do a round-table today, Ronnie mentioned that we had already had extended meetings twice this week and everyone was tired of them.
  • I went back to my chair, which was located on the guest side of Ronnie‘s rectangular office desk across from his own chair, and waited until he had pushed some curtains aside to enter his desk are and sat down, before telling him that I would not be here next Monday because I was going to a viewing of a house that was within a stone’s throw of his old high school, just a street or two south of it. He wowed and said that he really liked that area and wished me luck.
  • I then went to another desk to concentrate on my work, which was to write down and organize my previous dreams while also solving a puzzle involving a long row of black and white dots that was also somehow representative of my dreams. I looked behind me to see Tigey lying down on a sofa, his hands up in the air, but I decided not to pick him up and cuddle him until after I had finished writing down my dreams because he would be too distracting otherwise.
