Edmonton gets a fair amount of Northern lights but from where I am in the city, I almost never, with some minor exceptions, actually see them, even though Reddit is always lit up with posts by the next morning. However, On Monday, August 26th, at around 9:53 pm, I was sitting at my computer with the lights on and working away on the computer, when I suddenly saw a bright light outside in the sky, falling “vertically” down across the sky “toward the ground” or horizon at high speed, before disappearing about halfway down, as though it vanished into the clouds. And there was no explosion or anything after it should have “landed” on the ground.
I don’t think I had ever seen something like that before, and I expressed surprise at this in my main Discord. I didn’t see any references to this celestial event on Edmonton’s subreddit or Twitter local tag or anything like that. But it couldn’t have been anything else besides a falling meteorite or a Starlink satellite or something similar going by. It went by far too quickly for an airplane or helicopter, and I feel like it wasn’t a satellite either, but who knows. The most amazing part though was not only that it was so bright that I could see it over the brightness of my computer screens and the room lights and any outside lights as well, but also that it happened to fall within the sky area visible through the limited viewport of my balcony door over and behind my main monitor from my computer chair.
Another neat thing that happened this week was that Yucheng announced in our Dunman Whatsapp chat that he had finished his first full Ironman at Ironman Canada in Penticton, BC (local). It ran from Aug 24-25 2024. That’s a pretty awesome achievement, and definitely worth a mention here, especially as he also made a race report and I wanted to archive that, too. Sort of, archive.org sucks for saving Google documents.
A plushie that I had pledged for on a plushie crowdfunding site called Makeship in mid June, and which successfully completed its funding cycle in July, was supposedly slated for shipping on October 06 2024 but shipped this week instead, a month and a half ahead of schedule, which is nice. It will arrive in a couple weeks, so no need to change my shipping address or anything since I haven’t decided on a house to buy yet. I also pledged for a ranger plushie on the same website a couple of weeks ago, which will probably come by in a month or two. Both of those plushies are from Backpack Battles.
In additional crowdfunding news, I also pledged for this CD on Kickstarter since there was only a couple of days left on that and the pledge goal itself was already reached, and it’s from a singer I like, so we’ll see where that goes.
There isn’t much else that happened this week, besides scanning projects progressing a little, and me trying to get a bit more responsibility to do at work. I had a headache on both Monday as well as Saturday so it felt like the week flew by, and since Saturday is one of my work-on-blog days, this one isn’t too long. But it’s a long weekend this week as Monday is Labour Day, so that’s nice too. I started using a new shampoo this week but do not like its smell. And I was randomly made a VIP on WingBenny‘s Twitch channel, the first VIP channel badge that I’ve gotten anywhere on Twitch, so that was nice.
I do have a number of sky pictures this week to pad this section as usual, so here they are in chronological order.

It was raining a lot this week, which was wonderful, but I did get some nice cloud and sunset pictures anyway, as you can see above.
Games
I finished Littlewood with 100% achievements this week:
It was a fun game, though the last quarter or so of achievements were grindy checklist things after I had basically unlocked everything else. Still, an evening and a half or so of chopping wood, mining rocks, crossbreeding flowers, harvesting crops, gathering plants and flowers, and cooking later, and I had completed it all. My last skill to 99 was cooking, though that was not explicitly an achievement. My last resource collection achievement was farming. And my very last achievement turned out to be 150 villager quests, even though I was doing those every time they turned up. This is what my village looked like in the end:
It’s not the prettiest layout or anything, I saw several great ones posted on the Steam community, but nonetheless it’s the layout I ended up with and has everyone’s house wishes at 100% even though I think two of them (Willow wanting to be within 16 spaces of the player’s house, and someone else wanting to be within 16 spaces of the quarry) were bugged and had the inverse requirement instead.
Anyway Littlewood is my 103rd perfect game on Steam! And gave me my 10,053th achievement there.
Other games I played this week include Knock on the Coffin Lid, Night of the Full Moon, Dave the Diver, and Deadlock against bots with Jah, Satinel, Gibbs, Milumbar, Heg, Nak, Frotswa, and Kynji. Deadlock is mildly interesting but not really my sort of game, it’s very much like SMITE (local), which we played briefly in the past as well. The map is confusing and I don’t tend to play MOBAs well or enjoy them much. With friends and playing against bots though, that’s perfectly fine and fun.
Plushie of the Week #149
I still have a couple more plushies to feature from Kel‘s place in Guangzhou, and this week we have one of them. Instead of being a plushie from China though, or a beloved one she brought over with her from Canada, this one is also from Canada but was just an impulse purchase from a dollar store, Dollarama, just before she left for China in 2023.
The story is that Kel wanted to bring this into class at some point to show to her kids, but she hasn’t yet gotten around to doing that (and by her reckoning may never will), so it just sits in her apartment unit and keeps her and her other plushies company.
The plushie in question is a beaver — I’m fairly sure it’s not the only beaver we have, but we have so many plushies. So many. This one is definitely the most international and well-travelled one though.

Song of the Week #126
Title: Kumikyoku Nico Nico Douga
Artist: Shimo
Album:
Today we have our second guest entry! This one is from Satinel, and her introduction for her chosen song is as follows.
I thought of a lot of possible songs I could pick and also remembered that ages ago we’d exchanged a series of music videos on YouTube. When I went back to check those logs I found that pretty much every single song I’d considered for this was shared at the time. Also Shiara clearly forgot about this conversation or she wouldn’t have suggested I do this, she didn’t like most of them! I was going to list them all here, but it became too much trouble.
One of them was an Automatic Mario video, a trend where people created levels in Super Mario World which played themselves and the sound effects generated from this recreated popular songs. The one I shared at the time was Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now since it was the only English song. (I don’t care about the song itself, I only know it from this and that zombie movie. It’s fine, though.)
Some time later I also shared a song I like more, which I also only knew from these videos, Little Busters! (Emphasis theirs.) Shiara would later go on to purchase this game and stream her first (and only??) time playing it. She probably doesn’t remember this.
However! The first Automatic Mario video I ever saw was a huge medley of various songs. I didn’t share it with Shiara at the time because she wasn’t impressed by the first two and, also, it’s eleven minutes long. There were two versions that I had bookmarked, one with singing and one without, this is the one with.
Today (a week ago from when this is published?) I found a video that translates the lyrics which I’d never seen before.
I turned the link from the last paragraph into the video embed below instead.
There’s a lot of slander (or libel, as she calls it) here, so I’ll add a few notes in reply. Firstly, I totally did forget about this medley conversation we had, but the Queen song was shared back in August 11 2016, and the Little Busters! one on November 05 2017, before I even ever started anime, which was in November 2018. So it was a case of not knowing her audience back then. Although I apparently didn’t say that I liked or disliked either song. I’m not into Queen to begin with though, and it is true that I probably would have just found the medley to be weird at the time. Heck, I still sort of do.
Secondly, I don’t know what zombie movie she’s talking about, since I don’t watch English movies, and she knows that! The tease. It’s fine, though.
Thirdly, I do remember the Little Busters! game! And I also remember streaming it for her because she asked, and then stopping because she said it was enough, so I never went back to it after since she would not be there to see it or something. I don’t remember the shared song in the context of Automatic Mario videos though.
Fourthly, there’s actually a Wikipedia page for the medley, which is interesting. I didn’t realize that it was large/important enough to have its own Wikipedia page. It even has its own external wiki, and there’s a timestamped list of songs (local) there. And funnily enough, the first song on the medley is one that I do now recognize and like because it’s also in the Idolmaster anime, and is one of my favourite songs from the show, sung by my favourite character in the show. The cut of the song is even almost exactly the same.
And lastly, she complained about the process and then shared three different songs/videos anyway, the main one being a medley of 33 different songs, so that’s her tsundere side in action. But thanks for that! While not necessarily a true “song” by definition (since it’s a medley of other songs), it’s still super cool and a nice thing to archive.
Memory Snippet of the Week #133
I tried to make a list of MMOs that I have played in the past as part of putting together my gaming history. This is a living list, and I hope to eventually combine this with not only a list of MMOs, but also all other games that I’ve played. And then host it either on Shiarapedia or on some other site where I can categorize the list and have toggles to hide and unhide selected categories or something. But all that’s for the future.
The other problem with this list is that the definition of an MMO is very problematic. Are multiplayer games with shared “lobby” waiting areas and instanced gameplay maps MMOs? If so, wouldn’t that mean PUBG is an MMO? Or The First Descendant? Or Warframe? Is a shared adventure open world needed for to be considered an MMO? If so, wouldn’t that mean Tom Clancy’s The Division is an MMO? If either one is a no, is Dungeons and Dragons Online not an MMO?
Is global chat a necessity to be an MMO? A persistent world? Are server shards/instances allowed? Are ARPGs with economies like Path of Exile and Diablo 3 MMOs? Or RPGs with economies like Fallout 76? Is Ark: Survival Evolved an MMO because they have public shared servers? Are text-based MUDs MMOs because they’re a shared world? Are WAKFU and Stash, two turn-based combat games that do market themselves as MMOs, actually MMOs? What about crafting survival games, because they have a persistent world of sorts? What about Minecraft? What about Minecraft public servers or Grand Theft Auto Online? What about solo games with global chat like Tangledeep and Oafmatch? Or even Dark Souls? What about “raid-based” games like Monster Hunter: World? Global ranking-based games like League of Legends? What about No Man’s Sky? What about mobile games with guilds or clans? What about browser games with economies or PvP or city menu maps or even open world maps where you can encounter other players?
So anyway, I used my arbitrary decision-making skills to decide that the I’d just do traditional MMOs and throw in a few other MMO-lite games in square brackets. I also have a MUD list already and threw all those in in brackets too to show my transition from MUDs to MMOs. I also did compile a list of some other browser games and survival games, but those are not complete, and would make the list on this website too long anyway, so I left that off. I had at least 14 different instances of Minecraft to add to the list otherwise.
The list was compiled from things like date records on screenshots, note files, emails, and so on. It’s not complete, and even the entries have some uncertainty to them, especially the ones before 2016 or so. I’m sure I’m missing a few entries since there are just so many MMOs and I’ve dabbled in a lot of them, even if just for a little bit. I generally didn’t add those that are just one day trysts though, unless that was my only experience with the game, in which case why not? But if I stop playing a game and then return for just a day to do something, I don’t count that. LotRO and DDO are also problems because I’ve been back a few times over the years to claim annual free rewards and that’s it, and by and large I didn’t count those as well. And for some other games I logged on only a couple times in their last month or two as I wound down playing it, so I kind of did a gut call with those ones in deciding how to record those down.
Anyway, I’ll add more to the list as I think of or find evidence for them, for example I’m sure there’s a 4th DDO session that I am missing in the late 2010s, but my current list looks something like this. (2) and (3) after the name of a game represent my second and third stints returning to the game, and so on. I also coloured my MUDs purple. Could I have colour-coded or displayed or arranged this better? Probably, but I’d rather wait for wherever I’m going to park this list before becoming that fancy, and focus my time on trying to improve the accuracy and completeness of the list instead.

Dreams
Hey, another 7-day dream streak week!
Aug 26 2024
- There were a whole bunch of people in a field being divided into pairs for some school activity involving coming up with games to play or reviewing games or something. I was part of this group too, but I was a bit late to the pairing, so my partner was one of the last 5 or so people left looking confused and unable to find their partner from the little slip of paper they were given after everyone else had wandered off in pairs. She was a lanky girl who looked relieved once I identified myself.
- We went into the school building and sat down at a round table outside the canteen, where we chatted about our strategy and talked about a couple of example games that we knew. She then went in to the canteen to buy some food for us.
- While she was gone, another guy and girl who were also doing the same project sat down at a table across from ours. Although they were at a different table, it was basically bumping up against our table and I could hear them speak. The girl was apparently missing a chair so I gave them one of my extra stools as I had three of them on my side of my table.

- Snippet: I remember having the ability to lay down hearts or bubbles on a simplistic top-down view of a forest inside of a computer game, and I did so to lure someone who was attracted to it to the left side of the forest map where she would be safe. There were also scenes of some kind outside of the game itself, where I was talking to some people in a room that looked like part of a museum where I was playing the game in and explaining what I was doing.
Aug 28 2024
- I had a dream where I was walking around a narrow, multi-levelled mall that was shaped really weirdly, like branches on a tree. There weren’t many shops at all but Kel and I were going around trying to unravel two separate mysteries, the first one of which to do with music that had been boosted and edited in some way, and I don’t remember what the second one was but it involved the status of some shopkeepers.
- Someone brought up Michael Jackson as a possible violator of the first music plotline, but it was quickly pointed out that he passed away long before the style of edited music that we were cracking down on was even invented or made possible, so he and his music could not possibly have been edited by him.
- For the second mystery, whatever it was, we interviewed a bunch of shopkeepers about it, while inviting some of them to make videos about their products too. Desdanovas was manning one of those stores and made a video about his product, which was some sort of security software. Another shopkeeper was asked about the former owner of the store, who had passed away a long time ago. He spoke some sort of cryptic codephase that he apparently had been instructed to say by the previous owner when someone came to inquire about him though, but no one knew what that codephrase meant anymore. We guessed that it was likely some sort of phrase for a long-forgotten lover.
- Later, Kel and I were seated at a bench and she had to change her clothes, so we put up a barrier of paper napkins, like a Japanese folding screen, so that she would have some semblance of privacy while doing so.
- Snippet: Much earlier on, I had a different dream where my entire family was floating and swimming around inside a large bubble. This bubble was attached to a frog-like creature who was dragging the bubble somewhere as a form of mass transportation. To enter the bubble, I had to stand directly behind the frog-like creature, which looked like a female humanoid, and “walk” into her, with my face against the back of her head, at which point I would meld into her skin, and then into the bubble that way.
Aug 29 2024
- I remember being with other people and each of us having a small, rectangular plot of land represented by a top-down tilemap in a game that we could decorate however we like. The map was about maybe 20 tiles across and 10 tiles down and was made out of green tiles that represented grass. One of the items we could put on the map was a friendly red slime which was known as something similar to “offenbunnies” or “offalbunnies”, though I feel like it was a compound word made up of a 5-letter and a 6-letter half. There was also a concept where these plots of land were new or something and thus either the build limit was twice as high as they usually were, or twice as many of something was available, as a limited time promotion.
Aug 30 2024
- I wanted to get rid of a goody-too-shoes pristine image that I had as class president of my school class, so I could feel more relatable to my friends. There were several things I did in the dream story that contributed to this, the first being that I recorded a tape of some odd music that I sung, and then played some of at one point in the classroom without admitting to being the singer, to plant a seed of doubt in my friends’ minds. Kel helped with this too, coming up to me and rifling through my bag to borrow another tape or CD and “accidentally” showing the existance of the tape to some friends in the classroom who was looking on.
- Another thing I did was that everyone had to come up with some answers for an oral interview or something this morning, and I had gotten a hold of all the answers written down on a large sheet of paper and spent last night writing down comments on many of my classmates’ answers. They were helpful, but much blunter and ruder than people usually expected from me and my class president image. However, people including Yaoxiang and Zixiang apparently liked this side of me and were also shocked that I had reviewed 19 of the 43 comments in one evening alone.
- Lastly, there was a 3 vs 3 team match that was played on a soccer field in heavy fog, that involved running to a totem on the middle of the sidelines and kicking it down, and then running to the enemy goal and kicking down a totem that was there as well. Our team was expected to lose this game, but we won because I had distracted the leader of the other team, who was Tes. Apparently in the dream he was a bit of a control freak but I had flirted with him to get close to him prior to the game, and then while in his apartment I had written down some blunt comments on things that he had wanted answered, and this had upset him after I had left and before the match. While in the apartment, I had also met his current girlfriend as he was in the shower. We were both changing at that time and looked at each other while only in our underclothes, though it didn’t feel awkward at all, and I was trying to figure out which order to put on two singlets that I had.
Aug 31 2024
- I was making my way through a game world where combat was represented by taking turns to play cards, similar to Slay the Spire and other roguelike deckbuilders. I remember one monster having a “7-star” health bar, and something about multiple rounds in a fight with stacking unlock threshold for things that I could acquire. There was also another level where I was in an underwater level fighting shark enemies.
- Not all the encounters involved cards however. There was a scene where I was sitting down on the ground and taking cover behind a toilet bowl in a toilet while holding a pegleg as bullets whizzed by me. Another scene had me taking cover behind a gravestone, with the word “Block” being spammed over and over in a vertical marquee scrolling fashion above the gravestone as someone was trying to attack me but kept hitting the gravestone instead.
- Another scene I remember was trying to locate an NPC with another player, and I finally found him by buying a $4.75 book from a room, which opened up a backroom door leading to a slanted corridor that led past a beach area to the second level of a row of seaside houses. The person we were looking for was in one of those second level units and I met him there.
Sep 01 2024
- I was living overseas on a study exchange and staying in an apartment block with other overseas students. I left my lights on at night in the apartment partly as a safety feature, and partly because I was lazy, but I saw a couple other students hanging out in the corridor area outside by some benches, and reasoned that the apartment was going to be relatively safe, and leaving my lights on might actually lead to people peeking in to my large front windows as they walked by. I reasoned that that was also probably fine though since my bed was not visible from the window.
- While “inside” my apartment, there was also a scene where I was in the forest with some others and we had defeated a number of orcs or something and needed to do something with their corpses. But we couldn’t do so until daytime, so we settled down with pillows under a tree to sleep until the morning. I propped my pillow up against something so that I could lean back on it while sitting on the ground, planning to fall asleep that way. It was or had been raining, however, so there were puddles on some parts of the ground that the tree canopy didn’t cover, and I tried to avoid them while lying down.
