Dear Tigey,
House prices yuck. Maybe I’ll just live out of a cup like you do.

Life
I decided not to bid on the house that we saw last Saturday. It was in a weird location right on the other side of a tall fence dividing the house from a train station exit to the west, but without an actual path from the house to the station, so it was one of the furthest townhouses in the complex from the train station while also being the nearest to the noise from the station, including someone that was standing right at the mouth of that train station and blaring out loud music over some speakers when I was entering that train station on the way home.
The wall also was high enough to block a lot of the (eastern) sunlight coming into the kitchen, and made it so that even from upstairs you were not able to see the station from the two bedroom windows, which I would have loved — you just see the tall wall instead. That and the ugly basement were the deal breakers. So yeah, I passed on it.
They were asking for 287k for their house in a complex where someone had just sold their house for 289k two weeks ago or so, But two months before that another house had gone for around 275k. And the 289k one itself was an overpay from 285k. So I was balking at the price for the drawbacks that it had. Someone else did make an offer on that 287k house the next day though, so good for them I guess.
And then later on in the week, another house five or six doors away, in a slightly nicer location, put their house up for sale too. Their price? 309k. More than 20k above the other current one on the market, and more than 30k over the one that sold 3 months ago that was in between these last two houses. These houses aren’t that good, not with a $300 and change a month condo fee on top of that since they’re condo townhouses. The half-duplex (and the odd full duplex) houses in the areas that I am looking at are 350k-375k or so, so at that point those are far more appealing to wait for than a 310k condo townhouse.
I hope that 309k house doesn’t sell. Greedy greedy people. Though I probably would try the same in their shoes heh. But I hope it doesn’t sell. I won’t be able to buy it though since it will probably sell before it hits the 285k or so price point that I’d be comfortable considering it at. But I do wonder what it will end up selling at, so the experience of watching it go through the market should be intriguing at least.
On Sunday, I went to my parents’ place and hung out there for a few hours with the entire family. That was very refreshing for the soul. We swapped stories and plushies and gifts, and Jon showed me a house that he and his girlfriend are planning to buy. I might try to see if I can meet Kel (or Jon, if he wants) for a visit to K-Days sometime next week. Kel went off to Kelg- Calgary for this weekend though. Before she left, she also gave me this cup. Tigey says hiiiii!
This cup is the matching cup for this bowl that Kel got me on a previous return trip from Hong Kong. And the one that I originally bought a copy of but that broke on my way home from my Asia trip last year. Super nice of her! Thanks! I love the texture of both the bowl and cup, and the bowl is my main food bowl now, though it’s started to turn colour due to food stains.
Kel also gifted me a building blocks set once I mentioned that I had started collecting building blocks for Asian market/food-related scenes. She had one from Miniso depicting a hot pot stand sitting around and offloaded it into my bag:
That will remain in its box for now until I get a house and a bookshelf or some sort of display stand in the spare room though. Then I will build and deploy it onto the shelf. Thanks again Kel!
On the very early morning of Mon Jul 14, I saw a very weird and somewhat funny sight. It’s this:
To explain what’s happening here, I first need to note that the phone camera makes the area look a lot brighter than it actually was. As far as I was concerned the Southgate parking lot area, both the one below on the left as well as the upper parkade on the right, were pitch black to me. In comparison, this is usually what it looks like, as per a picture taken on the evening of Thu July 17:
What happened was that for some reason, overnight between Sunday night and Monday morning on Jul 13/14, whoever was in charge of Southgate‘s lights left all the parking lot lights off. But to add to the weirdness, note that the Hudson’s Bay sign was on! They’ve been off since I pointed it out a month ago, and they’ve been off every day since, including the rest of the week this week. But for just that one night, the Hudson’s Bay sign shone brightly again. And it shone especially strongly since all the street lamps were off.
So I think what happened is maybe that in whatever control room in Southgate controls the external lights, there are some light switches that are meant to be set to off when the evening comes and some others set to on, but whoever was on duty that way flipped the two around accidentally (or otherwise), and the lights meant to be off were turned on instead and vice versa. How odd.
When I was at my parents’ place on the weekend, one of the things we talked about was breakfasts, and they both made faces when they heard that I usually just ate a simple bowl of instant noodles in the morning. They suggested I try eggs instead, and I pondered the fact that I’ve actually barely ever tried frying eggs in a pan before. I mean I did occasionally many years ago back in Edmonton 205, as a side dish for a rice meal, but never at all back in Edmonton 4012, or back in Singapore, and never at all since moving to my current place as well. And never at all as a standalone meal by itself, plus even the side dish venture was very infrequent.
So anyway, on Monday, I went down to Safeway and picked up a carton of eggs, and also a pre-cooked chunk of ham which I cut up into many little slices. For the rest of the week, I had two slices of ham and two eggs for breakfast every day, and twice on the weekends for an extra late night snack as well, which was very decadent and enjoyable. Not only does it taste great, but the smell of the oil and the ham and eggs in the frying pan wafts around the apartment for so long after the meal is done as well, and is a very pleasing smell to me.
I even had to top up the ham and eggs on another Friday trip to Safeway since I was done the original half-sized chunk of ham and 2/3 of the 12-egg carton. And the meal itself only costs about $2.70 a helping I think, so it doesn’t break the bank either. I’m no good at frying eggs though, at least in the sense that the eggs always come out a mess, and it’d be nice to actually learn how to make them properly so they look nice coming out of the pan. In the meantime, I’ve experimented with adding other simple things to the dish and preserved cabbage chunks are nice for it so far.
To emphasize how little frying I’ve ever really done, my bottle of olive oil (nearly empty!) has a Best By date of April 2023. It seems like it was bought in 2020-2021. You know, I should do an audit of the stuff in my kitchen at some point.
On Friday, I went down to Jack’s Burger Shack for lunch again. I had gone there two weeks ago for YEG Burgerfest and had seen their upcoming gold rush burger offer which would give me two free tickets to K-Days, so I wanted to grab that. In the two intermittent weeks I also saw other stores in town give this same offer, but I did not see a full list of participating retailers taking part in this promotion, so I went with the one that I knew for sure. Anyway, here’s the store:
Offer (although this was in the blog two weeks ago too, but I mean so was the store technically):
Burger (most burgers look alike?):
And tickets (yay):
Here’s a picture on the wall that I quite liked too, and thought it was fitting because the meals here tend to get really messy due to a lack of utensils and/or places to clean up afterwards:
Although they did give me a glass of ice water and I might have used a little of that to help clean my hands before I drank the rest of the cup.
That was about all the excitement for my week, although on the way back our train did have to temporarily halt on a bridge overlooking the river due to obstructions ahead, so I had the chance to capture a nice scenic view of the North Sasketchewan River running through the middle of the city:
And while at Safeway, I saw a new-to-me sign that mentioned that a product, Bick’s Pickles in this case (never heard of it until now), was out of stock due to tariffs.
Interesting.
To close out the Life section for this week, I wanted to first mention one thing that I’ve been cognizant of over the past month or so — the pigeons which infested my balcony and our neighbourhood last year are gone this year for whatever reason. I’ve seen no pigeons at all on my railings this year, and only a very slight amount of residual poop left on the balcony, and I’ve not had to call my water gun into service either. How odd.
And next, here are some sky pictures for the week. First, some nice Jacob’s ladders or crepuscular rays from Mon Jul 14 at 9:04 pm:
Some close-ups of a red sun (it was redder in reality) on Wed Jul 16 at 9:40 pm:
And some clouds that kind of look like a giant bird spreading its wings out on Fri Jul 18 at 9:43 pm:
Games
I bounced around games a bit this week, because there was so much to play.
On stream, sandwiched between weekend demos, I played Prey for the entire weekday period. It’s a fun loot scavenging and office decoration game, although I wish I had a bit more furniture to decorate my office with. And I need a rotate item function, and the ability to bring items through zone transitions. There’s something about aliens and mimics in there too but they’re like spiders I just need to swat out of the way.
Off stream, I played a lot of Blue Prince for the early part of the week, and managed to reach Room 46 after 26 in-game days. Lots of neat puzzles for sure, including one that made me ponder about it overnight in bed with the game left open on the computer because for some reason they neglected to program in a proper save function mid-run and some room combinations are rare enough that quitting the run mid-run is a no-go. I did get my Eureka moments and solve the puzzles while ruminating in bed though. This game was so engrossing that my dreams this week were blanketed with references to it. And I have nearly 400 screenshots and counting from the game for puzzle-solving purposes.
Later on in the week, I moved away from Blue Prince a bit and went back to some Backpack Battles as well as Cyberpunk 2077. Not only did I finally pick up the DLC for the latter game during the last sale, but they also released patch 2.3 on July 17th, so that was a good excuse to look at it again, but I played a bit of the intro and kind of stalled out on it so I have to decide what I want to do with that game — continue playing my old save with stuff I’ve already forgotten in the rear view mirror, forcing myself through a new save and other stuff I’ve already done and still remember and resetting all my collectibles, or just going off and playing something else instead. We’ll see. Right now my issue is figuring out what all my old skills did and what build I was going for.
In between I also did a decent amount of Umamusume: Pretty Derby, still doing my one race per day and checking out the new events. It’s a good game and I still find it fun, just not one I want to burn myself out on. I’ve played plenty of long-term gachas before and this one is definitely headed toward being that 45 minutes a day with extra bursts when needed sort of game for me.
I also won a key to Blacksmith: Ignite the Forge, a game that I had demoed last weekend and that launched this week. Nomakk was playing it and had a couple of keys to give away and I won one of them. I haven’t actually had time to start playing the game though, so I haven’t actually redeemed it yet. Possibly this week!
Plushie of the Week #192
With Umamusume and their horse girls and horse races being such a (relatively) big thing in the gaming world the past couple of weeks, I was happy to see that Kel brought back a really cute horse plushie from Hong Kong. I don’t know much more about her other than its place of origin and that she’s technically a keychain, and sadly she doesn’t have a “real” horse name at all, but nonetheless she’s adorable and now has a little corner of the web dedicated to her too.

Sasa and Ladies’ Purse Day leads me to this interesting event (local) from the Hong Kong Jockey Club, on Nov 03 2024 at the Sha Tin Racecourse in Hong Kong, so maybe Kel visited that? Or maybe she picked this up afterwards separately.
The Gift at Races clue led me to this shop (local), and oh my, maybe I should be ordering stuff and shipping them to Kel for her to bring back to Edmonton whenever she visits us between school semesters. Some of these plushies are just too adorable.
Dreams
Jul 14 2025
- In part of my dream, I was putting down blue room tiles on a grid like I was playing Blue Prince, except that I had lots of little 1-room tiles and four of them were part of a hidden set that I wanted to discover. I had no idea which ones they were, although I knew that someone had written the name of the set down on the back of the four tiles in question, so that was what I was looking for.
- This game was somehow tied to getting a University certificate, and the teacher in charge of the certificate was talking to us on the 11th floor elevator lobby of a building about how to minimize randomness in the game. The elevator itself and the journey up to this floor was also somehow important in the plot but I don’t remember those details now.
- At one point there was also a scene reminiscent of an anime ending video, where five girls including me were walking along a long road and talking to each other. One of the girls suddenly lost connection on her phone, and when she realized that, she looked up again and was shocked to see that she was also now phased out of the instance that the other girls were in as well, and was now walking on an instance of the same road by herself, with no one in sight, even though the minimap showed the other four girls’ player dots right there with her.

- Snippet: There was a girl trying to watch some incriminating videos on a computer that would prove something or other, while being protected by a swarm of large and small crabs that moved very slowly, as well as a dome of smoky energy that was preventing the cops from entering. Eventually the cops broke in past the dome, then the crabs, and arrested her by pinning her arms behind her, handcuffing them together, then putting a large spike through the handcuffs. The spike extended all the way to the ground and she was pulled away from the computer as the cops pulled on the spike.
- Snippet: I was playing the Uma Musume game with a special human trainee instead of a horse, and there was a weird career objective where you had to lose to a specific horse in a specific early race. I was worried about being too strong and unable to lose to this horse, or successfully losing to the horse but then being too weak for all the subsequent win objectives, so I spent a few turns gathering up skill points without spending them. This worked, as I finished second to that horse in the race, and after that I invested all the points back into the character.
- Snippet: I was with Jon in an elevator and we were going to meet Kel on a middle floor which was in between where both of us were staying, so both of us had to travel partway instead of one of us travelling all the way to meet the other. Jon said that that was a novel idea to save time and I said that I had done this in a different dream before to meet up with someone else. There were other people on other floors that the elevator stopped at, as well as a train station, and a subplot about the importance of labelling the floors so people would know where to go for specific things.

- Snippet: Two young female detectives were drafting room tiles and placing them on a house grid, similar to Blue Prince, however for some reason they always ended up doing something weird and being kidnapped in the house while building it out. There was a community of people outside the house that was aware of their constant abilities to get in trouble though, and would come looking for them to free them.
- Snippet: In a later, different dream, I was working in a dining hall with my parents and helping them distribute the food to the tables in the large hall in preparation for a dinner. Someone outside was again drafting rooms and placing them on a grid like in Blue Prince, but for some reason they had drafted many copies of the same room tile and was trying to see how many they could connect together. They had at least a 3×3 grid of them that I could see from my vantage point.
Jul 17 2025
- Snippet: I was in a park with some friends while pulling out and drafting cards from a deck. The cards were similar in style to the ones from Blue Prince except no house was being built while I was drawing the cards. One major difference though was that each card was being upgraded as I drew them, with a choice of three upgrades that I could immediately apply to the card when I pulled it from the desk. I also remember being surprised when I pulled a shiny white card from the deck.
Jul 18 2025
- Snippet: I was waiting for a car ride from some people that I didn’t personally know, near a bus stop. But when the car arrived, I was told by the people in the car that the ride would cost several hundred dollars, so I balked at that and told them that I had decided not to get a ride in their car instead. I politely told them that I’d let them know by midnight tonight if I changed my mind and decided that I needed a ride. For now I decided to plot a slower route to my destination using the bus that stopped at the nearby bus stop, however, that bus had came and left just before they arrived, so I had a longer wait ahead of me to catch the next bus.
- Snippet: I had an inventory with some Tetris-shaped rune pieces, both straight and L-shaped. I could upgrade them, but the cost to upgrade them was ludicrous, for example I needed 100 identical copies of a white-clover patterned room piece to upgrade it, or 600 identical pieces to upgrade a straight wall piece, and so on.
- Snippet: Finally, I don’t remember the context but I remember meeting up with Nak to farm some enemies in a top-down game.

Dream 1
- I entered an elevator with three other people, two of which were waiting in the elevator lobby because they did not have a keycard to operate the elevator. They did live in the building though, on the second floor, but they were new and the landlord had given them faulty keycards that worked for their doors but not the elevator.
- They stayed in the elevator and rode up with me, first to the 13th floor where the fourth person got off, and then to the 30th floor where my unit was, before riding down again, so that they could chat with me while we waited.
- I told them they should get their keycards fixed, but one of the two said that she was trying to move to the Queen building instead, which was another highrise in the same complex that was next to a dead-end road that ended in a loop and then doubled back on itself, as she said that she liked that sort of road.
- Snippet: Somewhere earlier in this dream was also a scene where I was drafting rooms in a house, like in a game similar to Blue Prince, but other people were wandering around the house at the same time even as I was building it out. I drafted a gym room and managed to get a maximum stat bonus from it somehow even though I did not have synergy with the room and should have taken a stat penalty for that.
Dream 2
- I grouped up with three other people in a fantasy-style adventuring party to explore a building for adventure and loot. I found them by checking out a specific room near the front of the building where there were screens showing existing parties and who they were looking for, and that let people inspect the current members of the teams. Most of them needed a healer or a tank. I was a healer, and I joined a smaller group since I was a newer player, but I did notice that there were groups of five people looking for a sixth as well.
- I was new to this area and my party rushed off in front of me to the next room, getting mixed up with two other groups of six that were moving through it at the same time. I wasn’t sure where to go but eventually found them in a room east and then north and then west of that junction room.
- They were all lying dead on the floor surrounding by some scuttling monsters, and I told them to wait as I looked for my resurrect skill, since I had not had to use it before. I eventually found it near the end of my extremely long shortcut bar that held about 20 skills or so.
- Standing at the edge of the room, I managed to reach one and rez them without the monsters attacking me, and after doing that I noticed that the monsters were despawning. As I rezzed the others, I was told to not look at the eyes on the wall as that would summon more, and that as long as I didn’t stare at the ones that were currently in the room they wouldn’t attack me either.
- They explained something about staring at them also activating a sight-activated progress bar that was hidden between where their eyes were that causes the summons and attacks. They had come here to start because this room was supposed to be fairly safe, but apparently someone, either them or else someone else passing through the room recently, had stared at the wall or the monsters to trigger them. I healed up everyone and we grabbed some loot and left.
- Not too long after that, we parted ways as I needed to go back to my apartment, which was close by and might even have been in an adjacent building. On the way out I met WingBenny and showed him some receipts that I had in my pocket, and he noticed a ticket for the Cheese Zone which was a low level loot area. He made a comment about that and I said that I had just begun playing this game with some other online friends recently and we wanted to check it out as none of us had been there yet.
- In the next scene I was in front of my apartment door but there was a lot of stuff belonging to me lying just outside the door, in the elevator lobby. There were also some people moving through the elevator lobby now and then and I wanted to secure my stuff so I opened my door and started moving things in.
- The inside of my apartment was one large rectangular room partitioned in two by different floor tiles to look like there were two square rooms instead. There were some chairs and tables lying around scattered, a kitchen area on one side, and a TV mounted on the wall where I figured I could watch my evening Nomakk stream on, but otherwise there was a lot of room for me to move things into, so I concentrated on moving them into the center of the room.
- Outside, there were books, reams of papers, some tables and chairs, and many other random items to move in, including a bowl of uncooked rice and another bowl of uncooked noodles, both of which burst and spilled out into the backpack that I was carrying them in. I just brought them in and left them on the floor anyway though and resolved to sort it out later.
- I noticed one of the people passing by looking suspicious, like he had grabbed something from the stash that I was bringing in and stuffed it into a bag that he was clutching to his chest. I confronted him and he showed me some papers that he had taken, so I reclaimed those. I was still suspicious though, and asked him again after a couple of seconds what else he had taken. I got something back from him, and then a little later he returned Ducky as well.
- He seemed to be impressed with my intuition and we actually got to chatting a bit, he showed me a little white robot that he planted in the lobby, it masqueraded as a stray item left behind but actually had legs and a camera built in, so that people watching could figure out an opportune time to come out and steal whatever was left unattended. Apparently this event of people having to move stuff in to their apartment from the lobby happened fairly frequently. In fact, there was a second group of people across the large lobby from me seemingly doing the same thing.
- He stepped into the elevator once it arrived, and I saw the flash of another rubber duck once he turned around after stepping in. I rushed over and asked to see that but he showed me that it was a different rubber duck that looked lika a low-polygonal 3D computer art model instead of a smooth, rounded duck. He said that that one was actually his and was a school project. I stepped out and we parted ways, and after the door closed I heard him saying bye over the elevator intercom before it left for good. I suddenly wished I had traded contact info with him so that we could continue to chat.
- I resumed moving everything into my unit. While doing so, I also chatted up the people across the lobby and found out that they were actually moving out, and the main occupant, a teacher, had many boxes of old worksheets that he needed to bring home and needed to figure out which ones were important and which were not. He had his sister with him, who was helping him by taking some chairs home too. They were not concerned about people stealing their stuff and were going to leave most of their stuff in the lobby in the end anyway.
- A little later on, while coming out of my apartment to grab some of the last things left outside, I also noticed a little white object come to a halt and morph into an innocent-looking object. I realized that that was one of the robots that the friendly thief earlier had talked about. I grabbed the object and stuffed it into a plastic bag before hanging that bag up on a hook on the wall. Serves it right.

Dream 1
- I was part of a group of people attacking an LRT station in a game in my dreams. My team got wiped by whoever we were fighting, however because I was more of a support person and was not directly on the front lines, I managed to slip away from the enemy in the confusion by simply walking off as they looked for other enemy combatants.
- I slid myself over to a nearby convenience store that belonged to an NPC and worked there for a couple of weeks to a month before the coast cleared, which only took a few minutes in game, before daring to return to the scene where we had lost the fight.
- This was a game where once your character died, you had to press a Release or Respawn button to respawn at your base or somewhere else, but none of the players had actually respawned yet since they knew I was still alive, and none of the enemies knew that they had not respawned yet either.
- From here, I quietly snuck over and rezzed ragesaq, who then assisted me in going around and rezzing everyone else too.
Dream 2
- There were food items like potatoes, as well as keys and other useful gadgets, on a 5×3 or 5×5 grid as part of a game. Each grid item had a 1-3 star rating and a gold cost associated with buying each item.
- I didn’t actually need any of the items myself, though my teammates did, but what I did have was a unique skill that could permanently lower the cost of an item in the grid and all other items near to it as well. This lowered each item’s cost by 1-5 gold.
- I was also running analytics on what my teammates were buying, and either the analytics or the purchases themselves would occasionally unlock red keys for me to use. These red keys would unlock a group of squares that would then temporarily allow me to use my skill on them, so it was in my teammates’ best interest for them to give me those keys and then step back to let me use my skill.
Dream 3
- There was a scene where I was with my family in a kitchen and we were having breakfast around a table. Dad came into the room and wanted to go outside to check if the newspaper had been delivered but Mom told him that we had already checked and it was not there, and to please not open the door again because it was cold outside.
- I was boiling some stuff in a pot on the stove for a later meal and Mom went into the kitchen to look at it. She said that it was a good mix, especially since I had included a Chinese herbal ingredient in there that I had not tried before. She said it made good tea, and poured out a small bowl for both Jon and I to try.
Dream 4
- I was in a bookshop and was looking at their plushies. They were selling Squishmallows, 3 for $18, which I thought was a good deal until I noticed that they were all keychain-sized. I knew that there was another bookshop upstairs that would probably have better prices for them so I held off.
- However, this bookshop also had a small discount table, about the size of a single school desk but half as high off the ground, with other plushies and price tags on it. These included a little bear for $6 and some other weird, stiff plushies for between $1 to $6. One of the $1 ones did catch my eye, but the table got bumped and all the plushies and their tags fell onto the ground and I had to spend some time trying to put them back together.
- Eventually an employee walked in and said not to worry about it when I asked him to look at the price tags to make sure that I had rearranged them correctly. I asked if they sold some certain books here and he said that they might be in the adult section at the very back of the shop. I went to look, expecting adult books to be smut or something, but they were actually just old literary works from over 50 years ago. I browsed the rest of the shop but didn’t really find anything interesting.
