Life
It was so hot this week that I didn’t have the energy to do much. Every day was just survival. Shut the curtains in the early afternoon, turn on the fan, and try to survive until the end of my stream time (since the temperature drops dramatically in the evening between 6pm, when my stream starts, and 9pm, when my stream ends). Like seriously, what is this nonsense.
From Monday Aug 25:
From Saturday, Aug 30:
An entire week of no clouds! Just sun! And now that we’ve survived that, we get our clouds back next week but the temperatures are still hot for this area of the world. I hear a lot of places in the world would take ours in a heartbeat though. What qualifies as a heat wave here is cool weather for other parts of the world these days! And we better soak up the heat since snow is coming in two months.
At the start of the week, I went over to the parents’ place with my Surface Pro laptop and hooked up my laptop to their smart LG TV using Bluetooth. The reason for this was so I could look at a few potential houses with Dad and show him the house pictures on a larger screen, since his eyesight has been failing for some time now. This did work, although it took a long time to set up, partially because I initially forgot the password to the laptop and got locked out for a few minutes, and partially because the Bluetooth connection on the TV sucked and would just refuse to connect.
In the end, linking up the laptop to the TV via Bluetooth involved just trying to connect over and over and over until it worked, clearing the cached connection on the TV side each time in between tries. Once it was connected it mostly stayed connected though, dropping just once in an hour or so (which required me to repeat the same step again to reconnect — trying it over and over until it worked).
Anyway, from that whole debacle, we picked out one house that we might perhaps settle for, and I agreed with Dad that we’d go see it over the next day or two. I contacted my real estate agent when I got home, and… as usual, the real estate agent said the house was already pending. Oh well. The house had been on the market for over a week at that point, and had been privately on sale for over a month before that, and even now another 4 days later it’s still listed on the market? I guess the lister is lazy and did not remove it from the various realtor sides (since they’re self-representing), although I can’t help but think that my real estate agent isn’t really trying his best either. I believe that my “exclusivity contract” with him ends in November and I won’t be renewing it after that if we don’t find a home by then.
At least we didn’t have to head out in the heat this week.
On the way back from Dad‘s place, I saw that the local annual Midwest Resident Appreciation BBQ was going on for my apartment complex. I’ve been to a couple of these in the past, here’s the link to the 2024 one and that one has links to the 2023 and 2022 one. I didn’t stay long at this BBQ because it was late, and because it was HOT, but I did grab a free hot dog and take a few pictures.
This was my free hot dog — the sausage was actually really good.
And a wild rabbit was lounging in the grass by the side of a nearby building, glad that he was not inside the petting zoo being bunhandled by children.
Also, on last Sunday, I saw this at Southgate Centre. They had yet another little maker’s market called the Mom Market Collective Inc. (local) set up. I do like seeing these little fairs at Southgate, but the tables are never things that interest me. Southgate seems to like to try for higher-end, hoity-toity stuff, both in terms of the store roster they try to cultivate as well as the stalls like these in their fairs, instead of more down-to-earth, cheaper, eclectic options, and this fair was no different.
I had a couple of packages come in this week, one of them being my first package of Temu ever. There were a couple of boxes sealed up in flimsy plastic packaging, and one of the boxes arrived fine but the other looked like this:
Typical Temu quality. Both boxes were similar Loz bricks but one was almost perfect while this one was dented on both the top and bottom, on both the left and right side, so I don’t think it was a shipping issue. I think they just packed a dented box in. Whatever though, since the box was sealed properly and the pieces inside probably were all there anyway. Probably, because I didn’t actually open them — I won’t open these bricks and build them until I get my new house and a shelf in the spare room to house them. I do like Loz designs though, and I have five of their brick sets now.
Due to the heat and due to restarting streaming and group watch anime activities, and my Umamusume gacha game, I didn’t really have enough time to do much else this week. In particular, my art time suffered this week, although I did put in a bit of time playing around with Clip Studio and trying to learn the tools. I need to put a lot more time in this though and I get so easily distracted sometimes.
I only did a little bit of doodling this week, but outside of practice sessions, I did continue that drawing from two weeks ago using the reference drawing there. A little bit every week, right. I want to do more reference drawings though, they’re a fun way of improving core skills. I think?
Another effect of the heat was that I found a couple of bugs, specifically ants, in the apartment this week. I barely ever find bugs in the house — I haven’t seen a single one since the heat wave last year — but they always seem to appear in the bathroom first as well. Or maybe that’s just where I notice them, while I’m on the pot. I don’t know. Anyway there was one ant earlier in the week that I disposed off, then three during a stressful evening mid-week. I sprayed the corners and potential entry holes with insecticide after that and didn’t see one for the rest of the week, but I’m still a bit jittery.
Yet another effect of the heat was that I ordered online grocery delivery from T&T Supermarket for the third time this week. The last time I did it was at the start of July, but this time they had a $10 coupon that covered most of the shipping and handling fee, and then I spent 1,000 loyalty points from my T&T card to actually negate the shipping cost to get a net positive profit on it all. There was a free shipping coupon too but I would have saved less using that instead of the $10 off coupon. They didn’t stack though, since corporations are evil.
But online delivery is nice when I’m ordering heavy things like potatoes. And the potatoes (and carrots) from T&T are so much better than the ones from Safeway. The groceries seem to come in different packaging each time, last time it was in a box whose bottom gave up and broke just as I reached my door, this time it was in five different sealed handle-less paper bags that I had to drag into the lobby, then into the elevator on the ground floor while a conveniently-located John the Midwest handyman held the door open for me, and then drag out of the elevator once it reached my floor. And the top of one of the paper bags started to tear as I dragged them into my apartment. Everything made it, though, including not only those potatoes and carrots but also some um.. “Green Tea Red Bean Ice Cream”. It’s not bad.
Three separate sets of earbuds also arrived this week, a Bluetooth pair that Jah suggested, an IEM pair because I wanted a wired pair with USB-C cords and without volume controls, couldn’t find any, and then just settled for one with volume controls but that was purpotedly sturdy and also replaceable instead, and a cheap 3.5mm pair I used to fill up an Amazon order with that I gave to Dad cause he wanted a pair to use for his bedtime radio. I didn’t take a picture of the latter one, but the two former ones can be seen here:
Both of them are pretty. I like the purple case (and earbuds) for the Bluetooth pair, and I like the winded cords of the IEM one, known as Moondrop CHU II, as well as the anime-inspired case it came in. It even has a certificate of authenticity.
I don’t like Bluetooth ones in general because I’ve had lots of struggles pairing them on my phone when I need both to be connected to the phone but only really use one earbud at the time, since I am deaf in the other ear. I haven’t played around with it too much yet but on the one day I did try it, I definitely ran into issues where I’d pick out just one earphone from its case and it wouldn’t seamlessly connect. These ones also do not have the speaker centered in the middle of the earbud, but rather pointed out to one side, so the left earbud is completely useless to me because it doesn’t work in my working right ear even as a substitute in case the right earbud is low on battery. They force users to use the left earbud only in the left ear, and so on. Oh well. It still seems like a decent set overall I suppose, and they were only $25.
The Moondrop ones were also comparable both in that they were only $25 as well as having earbuds that were fitted to only work in one ear each, thus the second earbud is useless for me. However, since it’s modular, you can see in the picture above that I only actually attached one of the earbuds to the wire and left the other one as prongs. And if that wire actually breaks, I can probably move the earbud to the other wire, use that until it breaks, then just replace the cord instead of the entire thing. In theory anyway. We’ll see if it actually works like that. The audio quality is supposedly really good for its price point as an IEM, but I can never really tell and I was mostly going for it being modular heh.
Another thing I needed to plot the purchase of this week was scissors, because this has been happening to my kitchen scissors over the past month or so:
It’s gotten to the point where even with a screwdriver I can’t screw the fulcrum screw in anymore. Wanting something similarly long-lasting, as these scissors had served me well around 15 years, I ended up on the BuyItForLife subreddit and browsed a few threads there and got caught up looking at neat and sturdy Japanese pairs of scissors. A lot of their recommendations were not available in Amazon Canada or even other online stores without exorbitant shipping though, but I eventually settled on a Kai DH3345 pair which was more expensive than the two sets of earbuds above combined, but about half the price that it would have cost me to get any other pair I was considering.
I’d still like to go get a nice pair from Japan at some point though, but not right now. That being said, that did remind me that I still did not put aside any time this week to research the Asia trip in Jan-Feb 2025 that I wanted to make.
And a very happy birthday this week goes out to… my dream diary! My first entry in it was Aug 25 2016, so it passed its 9 year anniversary early this week. And one year I will catch up to putting all my entries into that instead of at the bottom of every blog post. (And also Satinel, my best friend and dearest muse, I hope you have a good year!)
Games
I played Outer Wilds on stream this week. I had played this for 3 hours in something like 2021 or so, but had not gotten very far at all. This time, using the stream as a commitment tool, I’ve put 15 hours in it and discovered so much about the game. There’s a ton more mysteries yet to uncover though.
I really like this game because it has a very archaeological and anthropological feel to it. Examining the clues of civilizations that came before us to figure out what the heck happened. I’ve mused about trying to become an anthropologist and have mentioned taking classes on it before, although it didn’t actually happen. Anyway it’s hard to talk about the game without being spoilery on it, but the shenanigans and reveals so far have been quite good!
Here are some notable screenshots from the week. First, a supernova in the face:
Then, a Fig backer satellite that I found. Fig doesn’t exist any more, but it used to be a Kickstarter-like website that didn’t have a very good reputation, for example one of the things that a couple of Fig games like Phoenix Point (local) did was to release on Epic Games only for the first year of their existence, which screwed over backers who invested in it for a return of the game’s profits for the first X number of months.
Or Starflight 3, which released (and was allowed to release) this stupid Elon Bundle in an attempt to save their failing crowdfunding attempt. They failed so badly that they’re not even listed as a failed crowdfund attempt on the Fig Wikipedia page. (I think in general, Fig’s creator, Double Fine, never really had a very good reputation outside of a couple of neat stylistic games that they’ve made either.)
Anyway Outer Wilds was one of the successful games funded on it, and they hid this unmarked satellite in game. Emmy_ was surprised when I found it because it was something she had not found in her playthrough, so I was glad that I could give her something new she had not seen.
Next, I had no idea I could crash into a tree hard enough to break my ship into pieces, but I could, so here’s the front pod of my very much modular ship lodged on a really sturdy dead tree. The rest of the ship was lying somewhere behind me.
And lastly, this.
Oops. Moving along, I mostly played Umamusume: Pretty Derby outside of stream. I had a couple of really good rolls this week, both on the gacha boxes (I did a 10-roll twice on a new character banner for 20 total rolls, and got a character I really wanted at 0.75% odds per roll) and on my characters’ career races (rolling horse girls with good stats that I could use as parents for other horse girls). I also cried at one of the stories. Gacha games really have the best stories. Additionally, I liked this separate line enough to screenshot it and use it as inspiration. “Sometimes, a chance encounter ends up as a precious part of someone’s life.” I call these mood pieces on the blog, but I haven’t actually attached a mood piece for quite some time. Well here’s one.
I also spent a little bit of time playing a bit of Vampire Survivors, since Nomakk was streaming it for a couple days midweek as well. I hadn’t played this one since 2021 or something like that either, so I decided to back up my save and start a new save. But the games are long and make me sleepy, so I only really play it at the very end of the night if I have a bit of time before bed. And that time wasn’t in high availability this week. Coincidentally though, they also released an open beta (local) this week that features online co-op. It would be fun to try that with friends at some point, if our time availability lines up.
Lastly, this was the last week for our old Lord of the Rings Online server, Landroval, where most of my current Discord crew (friends from Defenders of the Mithril Halls and Shadows of Eventide) met. The server will shut down (local) after this week, at 11:59 pm EST on Sunday, Aug 31, so there was a little urgency in trying to get people moved over before the Landroval server went dark, although the devs say that server transfers might still eventually become available again in the future. Who knows what sort of legacy data like kinship join dates might be lost at that point though, since the servers themselves will not be available to log in to.
Here’s one last screenshot of a very lonely Landroval Bree town square before I transferred my characters away. Plenty of adventures and events were had here.
I apparently had low level characters on a lot of servers, including ones that had been shuttered a while ago, and I took the opportunity to transfer and consolidate them together onto the new 64-bit servers.
Nak also let me know that there were some DDO servers closing (local) and the due date for that merge was also Sunday evening, but that process was a little bit different and also first required one of his friends, who was the guild leader of our existing guild there, moving the guild over to the new server first. So while I did the LotRO move on Friday evening, my DDO move wasn’t until Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon as I liquidated some low level characters to put all my remaining characters onto one server (Shadowdale).
Sep 01 2025 Edit: It turns out the due date for that merge was moved from Aug 31 to Sep 02 instead. Captured here for posterity (local).
Plushie of the Week #198
While I don’t remember the origin of this plushie, this one actually has a name and did take a spot on the plushie chair in my siblings’ rooms back when we were in Edmonton 205, as opposed to being stuck in a plastic box of plushies. She’s named Fairytale, and her name comes directly on her tag that she wears as a Ty plushie. The tag also comes with a 2004 date, which sets that as the lower bound for the year that we could have gotten her, and I don’t think it was much later than that at all so 2004-2005 is probably her correct join date. Almost certainly a gift from one of Kel‘s friends or something, though I will need to ask her to confirm or deny this someday.
Being a unicorn, she was friends with Unicoron, Purple, and Ally, as well as the Unicorn keychain. And Unibert to a lesser extent, even though Unibert was more of a half-unicorn half-Furby. She was a bit of a princess-type, and proudly presents her regal photos for her fans below.

- Snippet: I was walking around in an RPG as the main character, talking to people in various houses and raising my skills. I remember specifically that there was an aptitude meter for skill categories so that any single character couldn’t learn every skill. It was possible to raise this aptitude slightly for a couple of categories but not significantly and not across the board.
Aug 26 2025
- Snippet: I was walking around an area and using cards that I was holding to raise my stats, particularly stamina and speed, in a hybrid of Umamusume and some sort of generic collectible card game. I met several other people and we raised our stats together through events that happened in an overarching storyline, as I watched what different strategies other people used, for example one preson got in trouble because they only trained one useless statistic and nothing else. Occasionally we also ended up duelling each other, although that wasn’t too common.
Aug 27 2025
- Snippet: I remember popping in and out of an apartment that I was staying in while Mom was cleaning things up and moving them around, although she was usually in a side room with the door closed so I didn’t actually see her or get to speak to her. I was slightly annoyed at first that items were not where I last left them, then slightly worried at one point when I saw a hole in the floor next to the closed door leading to the room, but the next time I returned to the apartment the hole had been patched up by new wooden planks cut up into perfectly matching shapes.
- Snippet: There was also a storyline involving some of the characters from the Umamusume game acting as allies and rivals, and some training we did together, but I don’t remember specifics.
Aug 28 2025
- Snippet: I had an Umamusume training related dream but I don’t remember the details. I do remember waking up to the noise of construction work drifting in from outside my balcony door IRL, and noting that those noises were also present in my dream as a malfunctioning machine of some sort.
Aug 29 2025
- I watched a train go by the nearby train station from my apartment. It did not stop at the station because it was already full. The train station itself was also packed with people on a platform, including an Indian man in a red T-shirt that I somehow seemed to recognize from a past day or past dream or something. That train station was the second last station before the terminus station. It mirrored the nearby Southgate station being the second last one before Century Park in real life, except the train was headed in the other direction to get to the end station.
- Our apartment itself, which was located after the visible station and before the final station, had a private train that went to the terminus station as well. That train was a train with two or three short carriages, and it came out of the ceiling along some vertical tracks that curved to horizontal tracks, parked in the lobby for a couple of minutes to let 6 of us board, and then took off to the terminal. At the station, it did not use either of the main tracks since those were reserved for the public trains, instead it parked in a little track loop off to the side to let us off before heading back to the apartment.
- At the terminus, I went to a building that was a mix between school and a Lord of the Rings Online virtual world without any of the lore. I met up with Yucheng and we went out for a walk during lunch, heading toward a nearby group of shops that I said that I had never been to before. I saw a second-hand bookstore there and knew that both of us would enjoy it, and as we got closer I also saw a second-hand music CD shop that I was excited to visit and hoped to find some Japanese CDs at.
- We never ended up visiting the shops though, because as we passed by a school building I saw Danethor in there, on Discord voice chat with Jah and two other people who were mutual acquaintances. We went in to chat with them instead, listening to them talk to each other as they prepared for a quest. The game then randomly spawned a long, low-levelled global event quest that would produce lots of tier 1 animal hides, and one of the chat members that I didn’t know mentioned that he needed to do that quest. One of the others questioned him as to why he would do it now as the game servers were going to wipe in a week anyway.
- We also ended up visiting a quartermaster shop in another building that was giving out adventuring items for free to students. These items included an armour-boosting medicinal consumable and a sun-resistant gel as well as a third item. The girl that was manning the store was quitting as I got there, so the quest signs updated to say to talk to the girl’s mother if we wanted goods. However, the mother did not have an ingame model yet, so she was invisible to us, which caused us some confusion at first before we realized that she was standing right outside the store around where the girl used to be standing.
- I also recall seeing a girl wearing the same pink dinosaur shirt as I was wearing (and have in real life) at some point.
Aug 30 2025
- Snippet: I was being stalked by two women and possibly a guy friend of theirs out in a city. However, I lost them by walking across a road from them, then ducking behind a building which blocked their line of sight. I then took a bus to a train station and took that train away. To get home, I decided to take a circuitous train route to avoid the station nearest to where they had been, however at one of the stops that the train passed by, there was an announcement that a rich person had rented out the entire station and was looking for someone or planning to catch paseengers who loitered around or something. I was worried that this was done by the stalkers, but it was not, and the train ended up passing peacefully by.
- Snippet: I was in an overseas city on vacation, and had checked into a hotel room with Mom, Dad, and Kel. Even though it was getting late in the evening, and we already had bought some food to take along with us before we arrived at the hotel, I wanted to go out exploring to look for some Chinese food places to get extra food from. I knew that this would mean my blog time would be eaten up and I would be up past midnight typing up today’s travel blog journal entry in bed, but I still felt the sacrifice was worth it. I initially was going to go by myself, but I met Kel in the lobby, who expressed interest in going as well. So I told her that I’d wait for her to go back to the room and grab a sweater, and then I’d show her around the place as I’d been to this city before in the past, just not to this specific hotel or neighbourhood.
Aug 31 2025
- Snippet: A new, long raid quest was released in a game I was playing. This involved a lot of walking between places in the dream world, punctuated between some events that I don’t remember, and I alternated between solo and a group of 3 to do it.
