Dear Tigey,
The weather is taking a turn for the worse and it’s been cooler and rainier all week it seems.
It’s wonderful.

Life
My boss was away for a couple days this week, and our late morning standup meetings were cancelled due to this. I took advantage of the first one midweek to go down to the local barbershop and get a haircut, because it had been long enough since my last one that my hair felt heavy and I felt icky if I didn’t use a shampoo every day instead of every couple days. That, together with headaches (though I only got one a couple of weeks ago this time) is usually the sign that it’s around time for a haircut. This also came at a good time since I might or might not be going down to my parents’ place to stay with them for a couple of weeks, so this felt like “freshening up” in preparation for that.
I also bought a nice comfy pair of shorts because I have a lot more tops to wear around the house than I do bottoms. Southgate has many clothing stores, but most of them are very pricey, and not really geared toward casual wear. I bought my pair from a H&M clothing store for $17 in the end.
We haven’t actually decided as a family whether I’m going down for the full week or not, since that would necessitate me bringing my computer over there (or rather, Jon helping me do so, since he’s the only one that can drive properly at this point). Dad called me up midweek and suggested that I only go down for a couple hours during weekends while he goes out to buy groceries, and otherwise I can stay home but will have to help them order food and stuff now and then. He’s just trying to be considerate though, and I don’t think we really trust Mom and Dad to just live by themselves alone at this point when Mom will be out of commission for so long. But we’ll see what Jon and Kel think. That being said, I might have a package with a couple CDs arriving around the start of the surgery date, so we’ll see.
Dad also noted that the surgery date is confirmed but won’t be a sure thing until the actual surgery time itself because there’s always a risk that she’ll be bumped off if an emergency surgery case comes in around the same time. Which makes sense, but that’s a lot of uncertainty to worry about before a surgery, since one has to emotionally build up that sort of thing.
My computer chair broke this week:
Part of the back rest frame, made of metal, just snapped off entirely. I guess I’ve had this chair for oh.. at least 13 years now, and if I’m not wrong it was chilling in the family home for longer than that before. It had been “creaking” for about a week or so and I actually hate the material on the chair anyway, which is why I put a cloth over it, and so the chair never really brought me joy, but.. but I never knew it would end like this.
So anyway I looked at computer chairs this week as well. There are two furniture stores with chairs in Southgate Mall — Crate & Barrel and Restoration Hardware. Both are apparently pretty pricey, I was shocked at chairs that were on sale for things like $850.
I like that second chair quite a bit, but I’m sorry what? Since when were chairs this expensive? For just a chair? And several of the simple dining room tables were like $8,000…. I’m pretty sure I saw one north of $10,000 too. Crazy.
As one might notice, I was using a dining table sort of chair for my current “computer chair”, and that was what I was looking for for a replacement as well. I don’t actually like standard computer chairs with their wheels and such, though I used one at work and that one was fine enough. But in a house? Not really. Especially not on non-carpeted floors. I’d rather use a sturdy, comfortable chair and put it on a small carpet. Time to look at IKEA or something I guess.
For this week’s series of Pictures from my Balcony, I submit this picture of four people doing.. something.. to/from a car.
It was nothing nefarious, since they were there for over half an hour on Thursday, and then 3 of them spent time after that sitting on the railing in front of the car and chatting to each other, but I could still not figure out what they were doing in the brief time that I watched them. People-watching is fun, neh? They were back the very next night, on Friday the 13th, seemingly with more people, even though the car wasn’t left there overnight. And I still couldn’t figure out what they were doing. Maybe they were having a picnic?
But wait, the mystery goes even deeper, because on Saturday the 14th, at exactly 7pm, I saw two people pull up in that car, and park there in its designated parking spot. The man and woman got out of the little minivan, and then immediately got into the minivan that was in the parking spot directly to the right of it, then drove off in it. I never saw a woman in either night-time group. I went outside and took a picture of that larger minivan driving off out of sheer curiosity — it’s the black vehicle driving off on the left side of the carpark in the picture below.
That black minivan was occupying the adjacent parking spot that the smaller blue van is straddling in the two pictures above. I don’t understand what exactly is going on here but I have this entire intriguing headcanon story about spies dropping off packages to each other and exchanging cars so that they cannot be found by authorities. All foiled by a nosy neighbour in the neighbouring block. Since it was raining the other guys didn’t come along that evening though, and the black van returned eventually, which was different from the past two nights.
There are also these sunset and sky pictures. The point which the sun hits the horizon in the evening has been gradually moving south (i.e. shifting “right to left” across my balcony since my balcony faces west), and this week, on Monday Sep 09, it hit a point that was hidden behind the tall building in the distance, so it looked like the building itself was glowing!
The next two are from Tuesday, the 10th, at 7:16 pm and 7:55 pm.
Then this one from Thursday at 7:53 pm:
And lastly 8:22 pm from Saturday, the 14th:
How pretty.
I reflected this week what a good buy this knife that I bought in late June has been. I’ve been loving it, it’s totally revolutionized my kitchen prep work and I’ve been enjoying partitioning everything up into Tupperware containers and Stasher bags. I’ve only cut myself once on it too, while cutting some tofu of all things, and only almost dropped it on the floor and amputating a toe once as well.
I have also very much been missing travelling and seeing the sights and hearing the sounds and eating the food of the world, and making nice daily blog posts of precious daily life in faraway places. Especially Japan, but I’ve also been craving travelling around Canada a bit. Hmm. I’ve been wondering if I could find some sort of travel sponsorship, whether for website or for video blogging. Hmm.
I’ve also been spending more time watching random English VTubers recently, from small ones on Twitch to large Hololive EN ones on YouTube, and now I have this wistful wish that I could do something like that, though perhaps not exactly that. I wonder if it’s possible to reinvent my life and do something wild that would make me even more incredibly happy than I already am. What would I have to give up for that? What paths of opportunity even exist out there? I can dream, right? I wonder if I should just send out random cold calls.. err emails and see what sort of sponsorships I can get for anything interesting and inspiring.
Oh, and writing about random emails, I had emailed Ladymakeup about a month ago. This was the Polish company that I ordered the fancy toothpastes from several months ago. They took a full month to open a complaint ticket with the Polish postal service and patiently wait for a reply from *them* in turn, and it took some prodding for me before the makeup company finally said this week that they’d issue me a refund for the package that I requested but that never left Poland as far as I’m aware. I’m still waiting for the actual refund to be issued, though.
Games
I bounced between games this week, largely going between a mix of Core Keeper and Stardew Valley, the former of which just hit their 1.0 release (but still feels kind of boring), and the latter of which had been tugging at my sleeve ever since I completed that other achievement last week. I did a bit of Dave the Diver too, and technically a bit of Deadlock on Monday before our evening group more or less stopped playing it, partly because people are away on vacations and things. I also peeked at Frostpunk, since the sequel is coming out in a couple weeks, but eh, I don’t think I like that game. I’ve been in more of a building kick recently, but that one didn’t quite scratch the itch.
Short and sweet!
Plushie of the Week #151
Say hi to Gertrude. There’s a mildly interesting story behind this plushie, which is that I saw one single one of these on the discount rack at Indigo Spirit, the bookshop by the food court at Southgate Mall, last week. I picked that one up to look at her price tag, considered buying her, and put her down again, since I was already carrying a lot of grocery bags and wasn’t completely sold on buying her. At that point, she was immediately picked up by a teen girl who came into the store with her father, and they proceeded to walk around the bookstore for a while with it. I stalked them for a bit, seeing if she would have second thoughts and put the plushie back down on their way out, but they did not.
However, while trailing them around the store, I did find a full shelf of these identical plushies that were also on sale, in one of the internal shelves in the store anyway, they were just not featured up front on the discount shelf by the entrance to the store. At that point, I was like nah, I can technically come back next week and grab them if they are still around and on sale. So I left empty-handed (well, full-handed, since I had lots of grocery bags).
This week, I walked by the store again on my way to the food court after my haircut, and I saw all the Gertrude plushies out front in the sale shelf! There were over a dozen of them, and they were the same sale price as last week, $9.50 CAD before tax ($9.98 after), down from a regular price of $14.99. That was a reasonable price to me, so I picked one up and brought her home.
I also had originally thought that this was a penguin — I mean, she kind of looks like one, complete with a comfortable tuque hat, and there was no indication on the tag or anything that suggests that she wasn’t. However, when I looked at the receipt, she was labelled as a “Squishmallow Cdn Goose”. A Canada goose! I guess that explains the weird little white “beard” under the beak — Canada geese have that going under their neck.

Song of the Week #128
Title: Round and Round
Artist: Heize (ft. Han Soo Ji)
Album: Goblin OST (2017)
Today’s Song of the Week is written by guest host Kynji, and she’s our resident writer and English major and can write far more eloquently than the way I repeat different forms of the word write four times in one sentence, so I’ll let her speak for herself with minimal edits (mostly just moving the link down into the video embed):
When Shiara asked me to write a song review for her blog, I thought, “Sure, I know songs! I’ve heard songs! I can even sing songs!” (Not well, but that’s not a requirement, right?). She gave me free rein to pick any song, and suddenly, I realized… I have no idea what song to choose.
Music and I have a bit of an arms-length relationship. I don’t dislike it, but silence is often my preferred soundtrack. So now, I had to dig deep.
Literally. Shiara might’ve mentioned our old Spotify song swaps, where we’d pick (debate/argue over) weekly themes and add songs that fit. Spotify tells me that Jahandar kicked it off in February of 2013 with an inaugural song (I Will Possess Your Heart, Death Cab for Cutie if you must know). Apparently I didn’t add my first song until July 2013 (1977, Ana Tijoux).
I remember challenging myself to always pick a song I actually liked. Sometimes that meant scouring for a new one that fit both the theme and my personal taste. Since Shiara’s request, I’ve been revisiting some of them, digging up old weeks (and trying to figure out what our theme was based on the songs).
To add to the pressure of this blog moment, I feel like this should be a meaningful song, not just a random earworm. Something with purpose, significance, gravitas. Do I pick a song I truly love? A song tied to a memory? Something from my wedding? Or should I just cave and pick the song my kid makes me play 1,000 times a day? So many options, so much pressure. And I can’t think of anything.
Sorry, past-Kynji, but those picks? They’re just too 2013-2018. But wait! I have other Spotify playlists! More recent! (More passion, more energy). And honestly, they reflect the now version of Kynji a bit better (and this blog vibe?).
That said, my final choice landed on something I’ve been into lately: Round and Round by HEIZE & Han Suji. I stumbled into East Asian dramas a few years ago, and have been hooked ever since. This song stuck with me. It’s moody, it’s ethereal (and has a devastating Kdrama attached).
I’m also a habitual rewatcher, so if I enjoyed something once, you can bet I’ll goldfish-bowl my way back around to it again. (It’s a skill, really—rediscovering the same thing over and over and still thinking, ooh, look, shiny!) Now that I’ve listened to the song again I shall go back and rewatch the drama and break my own heart all over again.
So there it is. My grand Shiara-blog debut. It’s no wedding song or childhood nostalgia hit, but it’s one I actually like. And that counts for something, right?
So there you have it: my song pick, my not-so-deep reflections, and my grand contribution to Shiara‘s blog. Will it change your life? Probably not. But hey, maybe you’ll find a new song to hum or a show to binge. And if you don’t, well, there’s always next week’s entry.
Thank you! Fun writeup. I like the song. My only note to add on to this is that I’ve already made a memory snippet for the Spotify Song Swap, which you can read about more here. Kynji, there’s a theme list there too if you’re interested! And the entire playlist saved in a CSV file. Oh, and that she made me go look for the actual drama but it’s this one, Goblin, also known as Guardian: The Lonely and Great God.
Memory Snippet of the Week #135
This was partially me making a memory bookmark for me to look back at in the future. Then it devolves into history stuff which is more fitting for a Memory Segment writeup.
Firstly, I made a spreadsheet for my main night-time streamer, Nomakk, this week, to record down all his streams since he (recently) started streaming on YouTube Live as well, which saves videos instead of deleting them from Twitch. I shared it with the community there too. Apparently even though the videos from older streams are lost, there’s sites that at least kind of track what games were played when, going back years, so I need to import all of that data too so we can make tables and pull statistics on it.
Next, I also wanted to take this opportunity to reflect on the Twitch channels that I subscribe to, and some others that I follow, because this list will surely change in the future. I currently subscribe to (and mod for) Nomakk for evening streams, and Killadrix and ElanaOrama for the mornings. And also WingBenny since I met him in Hong Kong. Apparently he might be returning to Canada soon — he lives in Calgary, just to the south of me, so we might do another IRL meetup at some point.
It’s SUBtember this month on Twitch, with a 30% discount on the 6-month channel subscriptions that by themselves are already cheaper than subscribing month-to-month, so I gave them (or will be giving them) all 6-month subs.
Other than that, Twitch streams that I currently enjoy watching but have not (or are not currently) subscribed to yet include HowToBeQuiet, Etalyx, Nookrium, RualStorge, Rhadamant5186, SeriouslyClara, Dridlicious, and at least a dozen others for games, ppim, Zumi, GeezGiselle, Awkwards_Travel and a couple others for travel, rosiebellmoo and toma for VTuber stuff, vedal987 for his AI VTuber stream, a_couple_streams for live music, a few slightly larger channels like CohhCarnage, BikeMan, and DolphinChemist that I don’t watch but have not unfollowed because I like to see what they’re playing to get a pulse on what the Twitch community is into, 24/7 “noise” or music channels like RelaxBeats and RoadToMadeiraLive, and then a few misc channels based around a particular game like Chess, League of Legends, and SaltyBet, none of which I often visit anymore. There are also channels like SoEverdream and Inochifantasy that I used to be a fan of about maybe four months ago, but have since gotten off the hype bus for.
I also have one channel, GordMcLeod, that I follow because I originally met him on the This Week in Tech/Diamond Club (local)/Night Attack community, which I learnt about due to Jah and used to briefly hang out with on IRC many years ago. I even used to play on This Week in Tech’s Minecraft server, called Twitcraft, with GordMcLeod and other people, including some names that are very nostalgic to me, like ngtflyer, Linuxwitch, and TheSillyChicken. But he didn’t really remember my name from there, when I randomly found him on Twitch via my “Recommended Channels” list a couple of months ago, heh. Oh, and another Twitch channel I followed out of that network that’s worth mentioning is GoodDayInternet, which is one of the homes for a daily news show that used to be called Tech News Today and that I used to follow. I loved Tom Merritt and Sarah Lane, their two main hosts, and a couple of the other hosts that they used to have on set occasionally.
Going through my old Twitch follows list, I see people that I used to follow a long time ago, like PureKaos26 and AuroraPeachy, who were some of the first people I subscribed to back in 2016, with what was the free monthly Twitch Prime for having Amazon Prime way back then. I also see pianoimproman, an old guy streamer who plays great improvised versions of songs on his piano after listening to about 15 seconds of it, who exploded in popularity when they got raided by a big channel and suddenly had a small stadium worth of people (over 30k people) watching him at once back on Jan 26 2016. I remember that interesting night, when I saw that above thread on it while it was still live and alerted my main ZOMG Discord server that things were happening, and some of us went over to watch him too. Apparently they’ve made some missteps and — allegedly — gone downhill since then though. I mean, the stream numbers say he has around 17 followers on average (local) per stream now, so one way or another that channel’s taken a dive. At least he hasn’t gone inactive though.

- I was in a game where a bunch of us players were divided into groups and assigned to a VIP NPC as either protectors or scouts. Everyone arrived at a train station by train and got out, with the protectors taking care of the VIPs while the scouts ran on ahead to get things that they needed done. In my case, as well as Zixiang, who was also a scout like me, we left the station and went to scout out houses in nearby neighbourhoods for the VIP To stay in.
- We ended up on a 2D sidescrolling map with a number of cave entrances with doors in different neighbourhoods, and a price tag beneath each one. The map itself was roughly based on a Singapore MRT map, centered around us at a station on the eastern MRT line, with more expensive caves on the left part of the map, nearer to the center of the island where we had come from, as well as the right side of the map. Zixiang picked a cave worth around 200k dollars and teleported off to it, while I perused the list and noted down a few possible ones but decided to wait for the VIP to emerge before making any decision as I was not sure exactly how much money he had.

- Snippet: I woke up on my bed in my Edmonton 4012 bedroom and, as a reaction to something else that happened in my dream prior to that moment, decided to drop several classes that I was taking at school. Each dropped class was tantamount to giving up on a dream that I had, and I remember three in particular — beating Minecraft, looting one of every item in Terraria, and learning Japanese.

- Snippet: All I remember is something about eating lots of onions, and then opening my apartment front door, which looked out into my Yishun 723 house’s HDB flat corridor, and seeing two people that I knew there. Those two people proceeded to help me with stuff for a good part of the dream afterwards.

- There was a scene similar to a lane in a MOBA game, an overhead view of a portion of a dirt path with little NPCs walking by. They walked by a small house in a clearing, and the clearing had a background image of a slowly spinning ceiling fan superimposed over or underneath it, with its three blades rotating in a circle that enveloped the entire clearing, including the house. It was just cosmetic and didn’t injure anyone though. Inside the house were several characters owned by the same player, they were resolving a bunch of questions by arguing with each other until they came to a conclusion, at which point the active question card faded away and was replaced with a new one.
- Much later on, I visited a friend who had built a file server or NAS in his bedroom. It consisted of a computer casing that looked very much like white plastic drawers stacked on top of each other, with the drawers themselves pulled open ajar. Inside one of the top two drawers were a pile of hard drives, while the second one contained the CPU and motherboard and other similar internal computer organs. There was a huge cooler or something on a table behind the plastic drawers, emanating cold air through the ajar cracks of the drawers to keep their contents cool. I believe the third and bottom drawer in the stack contained a lot of CDs and was not left ajar.

- Snippet: I remember carrying around a yellow ball of light which had something to do with increasing my skills in 12% increments of a level. Also, at some point someone got yelled at for having an old version 2 of a skill instead of a version 3, which was about four updates ahead of what he had. He was angry about this and eventually stormed out of the room that we were in. There were also interactables on the ground which required certain skill levels to even interact with or something.
