Taste of Edmonton 2026

Introduction

Picking a day or two to go down to the event was weird this year, as Edmonton experienced lots of thunderstorms in July, and many of the days that were not raining were either burning hot (well, relatively speaking -- I mean temperatures above 30°C in this case here) or we were blanketed in wildfire smoke. I also had many packages coming in during these couple of weeks, as well as a laundry machine issue, an internet router issue, an electrician coming in to install a new outlet, work meetings... these were some busy weeks.

Still, I had bought a sheet of 40 tickets for $59.50 on Jul 10, and another 10 for $19.00 on Jul 22, so I was looking out for some windows of time that I could sneak down to Sir Winston Churchill Square for the Taste of Edmonton. My first opportunity for this came on Mon, Jul 20 after I took the day off of work due to a lack of internet, and the electrician came and left in the morning. The weather was cool, with a high of 20°C gracing us that day, and it had rained in the morning but was forecast to be dry and overcast for the rest of the day. That was perfect, so I headed down to go collect pictures of all the stalls that I could find. The second day was on Wed, Jul 22, when I went down at lunch to graze with my remaining tickets, and suffered a mild case of heat exhaustion on the way back, but that's another story for another place.

In terms of festival details, I had bought the 40 tickets with a $10 early bird discount, same as last year. With or without the discount, the prices were the same as last year. Base prices were:

40 - $69.50 ($1.7375/1)
20 - $37.00 ($1.85/1)
10 - $19.00 ($1.90/1)
5 - $9.75 ($1.95/1)
1 - $2.00 ($2.00/1)

The event website was here (local). It contained links to the online version of the festival grounds map (local), map with menu (local), and an online version of the actual festival guide (local), with map and menu too. Kind of repetitive, but that's fine, since I'm also going to feed into the repetition by scanning the actual physical guide below, even though it's functionally identical to the digital one. And there's a list of performances (local) on the McLellan Ross stage, which is also identical to the one in the booklet, except the per-day order of performance listings is reversed. There was also a separate website here (local), from the Wholly Handmade collective, who ran the vendor market at the Taste of Edmonton. That webpage doesn't capture very well, but it'll do.

The free festival guide was available for pickup at the 880 CHED Information Centre & Will Call tent, where I acquired my pre-sale tickets, and the Clover 8760 Ticket Centre booths, where people could buy tickets on-site for the more expensive price. After scanning, the festival guide looked like this:

According to what I wrote last year, there were 47 stalls and 5 food trucks. This year, the stalls went from 01-49 but the food trucks only go from A-C. On the food truck side, the Native Delights and Live Bowl'd food trucks were gone this year.

This one doesn't seem to be an actual restaurant, their Instagram (local) has one post on it and the post itself describes them as Colombian, their Google Maps address resolves to a residential house, and their event vendor page (local) and describes them as representing the Valencian Community and Latin America.

This one isn't a real restaurant either. Neither the name nor the logo matches up to a current restaurant in Edmonton (or anywhere), though there is a Poutine Palace (a couple, actually, and at least one accused (local) of being a ghost kitchen) elsewhere in Canada, and there apparently used to be a "Mama Donair & Poutine Palace" in Edmonton some years ago (local). Related or not? Ghost kitchen? Who knows. Taste of Edmonton's definition of who can participate is very lax.

20. Love Kitchen Catering

This was one of the stalls that I noted as not being a real restaurant last year. This year, they have two branded stalls, 20. Love Kitchen Catering and 42. Pasta by Love Kitchen. (It's possible that one of the ones that disappeared from last year, particularly Saluté, was theirs as well, but who knows.)

I actually picked up a business card from them this year, as they had a box of them, and the business card is listed down in the Other Swag section of this blog page below. The card links "Love Kitchen Catering" to someone named Rose Bossio, and a public Google search on that name shows that she's someone who is heavily involved in festival coordination around Edmonton, with ties to International Children’s Festival of the Arts (local), UFest (local) which I visited earlier this year, the International Fringe Festival (local) (the search result for her name on this page is in the alt text for the image on-screen, which reads "Vendor Administrator Rose Bossio marks the vendors spots during the set up the Fringe Festival in Edmonton, Alberta on Tuesday, August 13, 2013. Perry Mah/Edmonton Sun/QMI Agency"), and obviously this Taste of Edmonton event too. Also the owner of Ital-Canadian Meats (local), which was bought in 2006 (local).

Anyway, that rabbit hole was neat. I don't know her, but she seems like a very active grassroots person in the community. I still do have a slight concern that this event is supposed to be showcasing Edmonton restaurants and she now has at least two stalls in the event that are assumedly more for personal profit than for showcasing actual local restaurants, but I also don't know the context behind that (for example, maybe proceeds get donated or used to fund the event or something) so it's hard to judge. I do know she seems to have done a lot for the community over the years, and I do like having the context behind the "shadow stalls" at these types of events before I choose to buy at them.

When I asked about the card, because it had a name and address but not a menu or physical restaurant location or even website, I was told that they do catering but that they had no idea about the menu.

This one claims to be a mobile ice cream food truck (local) whose headquarters shares the same physical address as WOW! Factor Desserts (local). It is implied that this one only caters to events and festivals though, and so isn't really one of those trucks that you can find randomly parked in a location around town, though food truck culture is not really strong in Edmonton anyway.

This is another catering service that doesn't exist as an actual restaurant, just a food truck (local) that goes to events. They used to have (local) a physical location but not anymore. Random trivia: Their Facebook page (local) uses the wrong inflection on the e (è instead of é everywhere else).

34. Joanne's BBQ House

This was by far the busiest/most difficult store to take a decent picture of due to people blocking the view of the store or the banner. Long queues. It's kinda interesting to see American spelling in a Canadian festival too, though this was not the only offender of that! I also watched someone pull up with a palette full of crated fruits and unload them into the store when I was lined up here for my own festival food. This one is another catering food truck (local).

Yet another catering food truck (local). But, this store actually has a physical location in West Edmonton Mall (local) so unlike all the other "restaurants", this one actually counts in my book.

Same, as per their banner -- catering services but with actual physical walk-in locations.

38. L'Espresso Cafe (Menu: L'Espresso Café, but they don't seem to usually use the inflected e)

They're another "catering food truck only". Here's their catering form (local) and an Instagram post (local) showcasing the origin behind the name. Japanese and Filipino origins and it means "Let us munch together under the sun with positive energy." Neat.

41. Flipside BBQ

Another catering food truck (local)! You know, there are SO MANY catering food trucks masquerading as restaurants in this event. I haven't counted, and I didn't spot check all of them, but I wonder if there are more food trucks than actual restaurants in this Taste of Edmonton event.

Yet, the event description as per the Taste of Edmonton website says, "Taste of Edmonton is an eleven day festival offering a delicious sample of Edmonton's finest restaurants, arts and culture!" Restaurants. Not catering food trucks that just visit events all year but are somehow given actual booths here instead of food truck designations. Anyone looking at the event would think at a glance that there were 49 restaurants and 3 food trucks. It's probably much closer to 30-20 or even 25-25. Kinda misleading.

And the alcohol tent in the middle of the event, called THE BAR managed by Sidecar Saloon (local). I wanted to capture that page because it lists where all the individual alcohol options were from too.

Gallery of Other Stalls

First up, there was an artisan market on site called THE MARKET by Wholly Handmade. The vendor list was posted in the intro section above but I'll re-link it here (local), too. The problem with capturing pictures of these is two-fold. One is that not every vendor put a sign up proclaiming their name, and the second is that most of the vendors were not there on every single day, and I sure wasn't going to go there every day myself to log a couple of new vendors every day. So these were just best effort pictures of which vendors were there, during the days that I myself was there.

When I came back on the 22nd around lunchtime, it was still Galaxy Pet Treats though.

I'm pretty sure that's the name of this store, I'm not 100% sure, but I concluded that it was after cataloguing all the vendor stalls that were supposed to be here on the 20th, elimination of the ones I knew, and examination of the goods against the missing ones, as well as the fact that the store was here on the 20th but not the 22nd. The lady excitedly said a bunch of things to me after I took the picture, I believe in an attempt to crack a joke, but unfortunately I didn't quite understand her! I laughed and nodded and moved on though. Sorry.

They had a full tent on the 20th, but only a half-tent on the 22nd when I returned. That picture is below.

On the 20th, Dazzling Designs just had a half-tent here, with the booth on the right being empty, and on the 22nd they had a half-tent with the booth on the right being occupied. This tells me that there was supposed to be a vendor there on the 20th that did not show up. Due to that, even though I didn't see a nameplate or recognizable item for the store on the right, I think that's Bonjour Namaste, as the other two stores that were unaccounted for on the 20th (and that I never found) were Hats by Sukhi and Sunwapta Woodworking, and that store doesn't sell hats or woodworking.

The vendor of the Niki's Crafting Events shop gave me another smile here! She's so friendly! Also that Lightworker Navigation sign nearly blew over onto me due to a strong gust of wind as I walked by! One of the two ladies seated behind the counter stood up in alarm.

There were also a few art stalls set up as part of the NOA (Night of Artists) Gallery and Gifts collective, which I had seen before when I went to Bonnie Doon Shopping Centre last year. And in last year's Taste of Edmonton. A lady called Karen Bishop was there making a watercolour drawing and chatting to passersby. There didn't seem to be anyone there that was offering caricature or drawing services though, so Tigey did not get to add to his personal portrait collection.

There were a couple miscellaneous booths that weren't quite stalls and weren't quite sponsors. Like the children's play area, Magic Pixie Entertainment:

Misc Event Pictures

There were a bunch of map signboards with different event posters plastered up around the event, and this first one is interesting:

The trailing "E" in "McLennan Ross Stage" is missing here, and lest one thinks that that was just an issue with this specific signboard, here's a different one with the same error, where someone had drawn on the E manually. Oops. Critical printing failure.

There was supposedly a "rooftop patio" premium area (local) that they sponsored as well, but it was so tiny and pointless that I apparently didn't capture any of it except a little bit of the stairs leading up to it in the last picture above. One would think it would be closer to the stage, which is what all the front row seats in the first gallery picture above are facing, but nope, it's way back.

Here are a couple general pictures of the festival and some of the seating/eating places. I really should have taken more, but this post is how long already?

There was a recharging station for if one's phone was low on battery. I didn't see anyone using it, and I didn't use it myself even when my battery was almost dead, since it was pay-to-use.

And here's a sticker on one of the event tents showing that they were from a company called Special Event Sales (local).

Lastly, there were a bunch of people outside the east gate of the event representing a charity called Save the Children (local), and one of them, a lady named Neeta, hailed me down to chat with me about their charity. I would have been happy to be guilt-tripped into a $10 donation, but they didn't accept cash donations (as per the badge below) and asked for a minimum monthly donation of $15 instead. I said I'd look into it online when I get back, but that I was in no position to make such a donation. Still, I'll at least link it here.

Food Pictures

Now, what food did I get here? I had 50 tickets, and I asked people in Discord to give me suggestions as to what to try. I eventually ended up trying every single suggestion, for a total of 49 tickets, over the two days that I was here. They are all logged below. 4 tickets was basically equivalent to $6 CAD here, so ALL of these were basically grossly overpriced. Due to that, I'm not going to comment individually on how any of the food items below were overpriced. Just assume there's a "This was overpriced." tacked on to the end of every little review unless otherwise stated.

Jahandar had 5 suggestions, which were:

Mezcal Suadero Beef Taco with Rice, from 18. The 3 Amigos Authentic Mexican Cuisine (4 tickets, Jul 20):

This was a really weak-looking "taco", though it didn't taste bad. Kel and I apparently tried a "Mezcal Beef Brisket Taco" from them last year, which was similar, but seemed slightly more filling.

Calamari, from 20. Love Kitchen Catering (4 tickets, Jul 20)

This one was nice, and came with tartar sauce (I think) on the side.

Pork Belly Roast with Rice & Gluten-Free Gravy, from 34. Joanne's BBQ House (4 tickets, Jul 20)

This was from one of the busiest stalls in the festival. The rice was really fluffy and nice. The pork belly roast was very dry. A somewhat Chinese-style dish overall (which I didn't really expect from the stall name). I apparently tried this last year too. I'm happy to report that only a bit of rice stuck to the bowl this time.

Lumpia Bites, from 49. Gie's Cookery Filipino Cuisine Catering (4 tickets, Jul 22)

These were nice, and the sweet chilli sauce went well with it too. But each of the six pieces was seriously just a small bite. I did like rolling them in the sauce and then popping them into my mouth though.

Hey Guy Hazy IPA, from THE BAR managed by Sidecar Saloon (5 tickets, Jul 22)

I don't drink alcohol at all, so I wasn't planning on trying any alcohol, but Jah had suggested this and I did have six tickets left over at the end, which I was planning to spend on a 4-ticket dish I had my eyes on, plus a set of reusable cultery with the other two tickets. But this ended up being the last suggested item that I did not try, so I sacrificed that and tried this instead. This is only the second time in my life I've drank alcohol (besides stuff used in cooking), I think.

I finished the whole thing in many little sips. I didn't like the slight bitterness in each sip, but it wasn't absolutely awful. I don't like fizziness either. I did like the light mix of citrus and a bread-like taste that lingered in my mouth for a couple hours afterwards though, once I washed away the bitterness with water.

Wildberry Tart, from 17. Kokom's Bannock Kitchen (4 tickets, Jul 20)

This was absolutely tiny. Oddly, even though I do not have a sweet tooth at all, I did like this one.

Mushroom Nalysnyky, from 24. Yo Baba! (3 tickets, Jul 20)

Nalysnyky are apparently Ukrainian crepes. These were like cabbage rolls, but mushroom instead. I really like mushrooms so I enjoyed this.

Kiklam & Fish Ball Delight, from 45. Gentea (4 tickets, Jul 20)

This was the oddest item I ate. I liked it, but I struggled to describe it. It was kind of like Asian fish cakes, but with a bit of a starchy potato-like texture to it too.

Salt Fish Fritters, from 4. Irie Foods (3 tickets, Jul 22)

I wasn't expecting how light and fluffy and easy to eat these were! They were oily, but I basically inhaled them and they were gone in an instant. It came with a mix of tartar sauce and something that sounded like "jerk sauce", which I'm not familiar with.

Finally, Trin also suggested four items:

Coconut Alfajor, from 44. Pebre & Co. Empanadas (3 tickets, Jul 22)

Technically, she said "any empanadas" from this store, and I was not certain if an alfajor was an empanada or not, but I figured anything from the store would work since empanadas was in the name. At the time, I had not planned on getting the IPA so I only had a budget of 3 tickets to spend here instead of 4. If I had known I would have had a ticket left over, I would had upgraded this to one of the 4-ticket empanadas. That being said, I did kinda like this but the coconut did overpower any other taste between the cookies for me.

Gobi 65 (Cauliflower Fry), from 43. Chennai Super Kitchen (CSK) (4 tickets, Jul 22)

This was fairly tasty while eating it, though the taste profile was quite mild and didn't leave any sort of an aftertaste. Some of the smaller bits were hard to eat with a toothpick. Several leapt off my plate onto the ground in protest even though I was seated when I ate this. The helping was fairly large though, compared to some of the other nonsense in the fair that I had tried.

Pastel de Queijo, from 26. Paraiso Tropical Latin Market (3 tickets, Jul 22)

These were basically Asian curry puffs! But with cheese, and the red bits were guava. There was a version without guava that cost the same number of tickets, too. It was okay.

Yummy Brisket Arepa, from 18. Yummi Mami (4 tickets, Jul 22)

I had expected this to be sweet since it came from Yummy Mami, but it instead surprised me since it was savoury instead. It was also very confusing to eat, I didn't really know how to work it with a fork, and ended up sitting down and using the fork to shove it to the side of the plate and bringing the plate itself up to my mouth to slowly eat it that way heh. It was surprisingly good.

My favourite item that I tried this year was a toss-up between the Salt Fish Fritters and the Yummy Brisket Arepa. I'd probably give it to the Salt Fish Fritters if I absolutely had to pick one, but I'd rather give the win to both of them. It's not a really high bar though, none of the food items really ran away with the trophy.

Other Swag

Here are some pictures of the event tickets this year. The 40-ticket sheet that I originally bought, and the 10-ticket sheet that I got afterwards to top up my stash to finish the requests.

The Neo store was giving away sunglasses, and insisted that I take one even though I said that I was familiar with their services already from their stall at Southgate.

I don't plan on keeping this though, so it's getting tossed.

I also picked up some tea from the Cheryl's Cozy Kitchen stall, after asking them for the tea flavour that I was most unlikely to be able to get anywhere else. In the end, I walked away with this packet of Rosemary Orchard Comfort Cold Brew Fruit Tea for $16:

And lastly, I picked up quite a bit of paper ephemera in the form of brochures, from the Vegans and Vegetarians table and the Arts District Edmonton table in particular, and a couple of other things like postcards and flyers from various tables and stalls, as well as three restaurant menus from the Szechuan Paramount stall. I did scan all of them but am not going to post them here. I am going to upload all the business cards I collected and scanned in a gallery though, as a cross-section of some of the businesses that were here at the event! Most of them are front/back scans, more or less in alphabetical order, though I put the vertical-aligned ones at the end.
