Life

This week was fairly quiet, with the busy highlight of the week being on Monday, when Dad and I went down to a potential house for sale to view it. It was in a convenient enough location, and even had a nice yard filled with pebbles (and thus not requiring much mowing) that we liked, however the basement was a bit of a mess and would have required work.

It was on sale for 375k though, whereas a similar house just a few doors away sold for 327k less than a year ago. Still, I floated an offer of 360-365k or so but was told by my realtor that they already had five offers even though the house had only been on the market for two or three days at that point, at least two of which seemed to be around asking price based on what the other realtor said, so my realtor advised that we didn’t even bother making an offer for it and I agreed. It’s now already in Pending state, and I shudder to see how much it will sell for. Apparently the housing market is “very hot” right now and people are overpaying for houses (though that was what my previous realtor claimed, too). It wasn’t my ideal house though so I refused to overpay for it. And I probably won’t be able to get a good house in my desired neighbourhoods anytime soon due to that mindset, huh.

Dad really liked the new realtor though, although it was our first time meeting him, because he passed a test that the previous realtor did not — it was cold out and Dad casually mentioned at the end of the inspection that we were headed back to Southgate Mall to have lunch there, so the realtor offered us a ride back in his car. Dad was immediately smitten and wanted to know if he helped arrange for rentals as well, to give him some more business, but he said that he unfortunately did not.

Once back at Southgate, I chilled out with Dad as we walked around a bit, visiting both the Safeway as well as the London Drugs there. I saw a bunch of Squishmallow plushies on deep sale ($9.99 for some of the 12 inch ones (local)) but held out this time, because they were Nightmare Before Christmas branded ones and I know nothing about that franchise and the plushies did not look cute in the least. We chatted a bunch as we bought lunch to bring back to our respective homes, and then we parted ways.

At Safeway this week, I bought some new bread that they had for sale, although Dad said that the family sees these (or something very similar) at Superstore all the time, as well as some white honey that was on sale for 50% off on the overstock shelves. The “Golden Happiness” branded bread was okay, but has very little filling inside and has probably been a victim of shrinkflation over the years. The “Beelicious” branded raw white honey was delicious! And it being acquired at $13.49 instead of $26.99 felt good too. However the margarine-type container it came in is terrible and difficult to keep clean of honey, especially around the edges where the lid and the container touch.

I did put some of the honey in the bread to help counteract the lack of filling and that felt nice and decadent, however where the honey truly shone was in helping with the taste of the tea that I had bought over the past couple weeks, in particular the Lunar New Year tea from Harney & Sons that arrived last week. It was a game-changer for that one, and when I mentioned that to Nomakk, he said that oh yeah, he liked the tea very much but also drank it with honey, and not just raw by itself.

Since this section isn’t very long this week, here’s a couple of pictures of the two above things to pad it:

I didn’t have the best opinion of the stuff I got from Costco a couple of weeks ago, but now that I’ve had both the nuggets and spinach leaves for a while, I’d like to extend my apologies to both products. They’re still not the freshest or highest quality products, but they last so long and have been so helpful in filling holes in my cooking schedule that they have been very much worth what I paid for them and more. Would definitely buy more of them now.

The weather has been getting much better the last couple weeks, and I will probably attempt to start strolling and travelling around the city more over the next month or so. However, and I don’t know why this has been happening, the heating vent in the building (which I believe I can’t really adjust very well) has also started really intensifying its heat over the past week as well, to the point that I leave my balcony door ajar sometimes even though it’s still only around the freezing mark outside, so that my apartment settles into a nice temperature range. This is actually a very pleasant feeling, since I like the sounds of distant vehicles and other ambient noises coming in, as well as the various scents that the wind brings, and Friday night this week even marked the first night this year that I slept with the balcony door ajar instead of closed.

I have this strong urge to travel again, and I’ve been looking at least at trips within Canada and even Alberta, perhaps to Banff, Jasper, or even Drumheller for a day trip or two. However, before I do any of that, I need to figure out what to do with my old laptop. The one that I brought to my Asia-Pacific trip isn’t any good, I don’t trust its charging slot anymore and I believe once I got back home and tried using it a bunch, it started failing again. But it was also too big and too bulky to bring around nicely. I need a smaller laptop, something closer to the Surface Pro that I used to have from work several years ago. So I’ll have to find something from that, especially since my annual Personal Spending Account from my job has refilled. And write off that lousy Gigabyte Aorus 15P XD laptop.

Now, I could use that PSA for my internet bill as well, but upon doing pre-tax-returns research, I found that not only could I likely claim the games that I buy to play on my Twitch stream against my tax return, but also a portion of my Internet fees and things like that as start-up and ongoing office expenses, so I obviously don’t want to use up my PSA to mitigate that too as it seems like a form of double-dipping to me. There’s quite a few pieces of documentation online about Canada and the tax implications for activities like streaming, like here (local) from the official Canada government website.

That being said, there is a stipulation that you have to be actively trying to make money and grow the business, to differentiate it from being a hobby, which is why becoming an affiliate earlier on in the year was important. And also tracking and taking screenshots of my expenses and the earnings dashboard every week, though I missed last Saturday. I also haven’t gotten anywhere close to my first payout yet. Eventually. But because I consistently stream three hours a day and have plans for art I want to commission and stuff to help with advertising and growth, it looks like I can likely claim it as a business and write off the cost of games that I buy for the stream, as well as part of the monthly Internet and my rent fees as a home office, as business expenses against the regular income I get from my main job. Within reason. I do, after all, have a long-term goal I want to head towards that is very decidedly non-hobby. I’m just building up my portfolio and experience levels right now, terrible as it currently is.

Lastly, but not leastly, here are a couple of sky pictures from the week. Nothing too exciting, but still, a silver lining of having to renew my lease here for another year will be the great skies that I will get to see through the year.

Tuesday Mar 18, 8:06 pm:

Thursday Mar 20, 7:50 pm:

Wispy, windswept skies. I love them. I stream from 6pm to 9pm every night, but those two pictures were taken during that time span because one advantage of having those dastardly ads running every hour during my Twitch stream is being able to take a 3 minute break and go sip a cup of tea or visit the washroom or simply go out to the balcony and take pictures. Apparently over the past month I’ve streamed 89.2 hours and taken 5h 6m of ad breaks in that time (though I played right through a good chunk of that, depending on who was around). And earned $2.29 USD in ad revenue.

Games

On stream, I finished the HD Remaster of Suikoden I last Sunday and immediately started the HD Remaster of Suikoden II. They were sold together and have the same store page on Steam. The first game was cool enough, but was plagued by a terrible UI and inventory system, which the second vastly improves on. There were some places where it regressed though, like now the saving menu is terrible and very easy to mess up on because the options are badly arranged.

But all in all, while the main story in Suikoden I was fine, it was ultimately not very fleshed out, like there were tons of characters in your castle that were just there with no backstory and no interaction whatsoever besides a couple of lines when you first recruited them. I’m not sure if Suikoden II vastly improves on that or not, but so far at least, the world seems more alive, the story is funnier and more well-written, and more effort was put into designing the castle, so hopefully there’s more side stories and stuff that are fleshed out too so the characters don’t feel so empty.

There’s at least two, maybe three weeks more of Suikoden II before I complete the game, likely, but I do wonder what I will play next. Probably some non-JRPG indie game before going back to JRPGs. I haven’t decided though.

Off-stream, I took it easy and did other not-game things for the most bit. Early on in the week, I played some Backpack Battles and W.A.N.D. Project, and a very tiny bit of CivIdle, but past Monday or so, the main game I put my time into was an idle/incremental game, Your Chronicle. I actually really like this game, and its simplicity, though its less of an idle game since most things have item or statistic caps and don’t stack forever, and more of a game that’s halfway between an idle/incremental game and something like Hero of the Kingdom, another game that I like that has a bunch of timed counters and things to collect to unlock other things. It eventually got old waiting for things to tick down (or up) though, the way that many incremental games end for me.

I daydreamed about a way to iterate upon and improve on the concept and make a game like that in a cyberpunk setting. Just a bunch of box timers to click on that unlock other things over time, but a sprawling story that slowly unfolds out based on that, and perhaps less focused on padding the game’s playtime in an idle sense and more focused on juggling and finding different resources to succeed in heists and things like that.

The other game I played from midweek onwards was Girls’ Frontline 2: Exilium, and this one I can put blame for squarely at the feet of my evening time Twitch streamer du jour, Nomakk. He randomly started playing that between strategy game releases as he was looking for something to play at the time, and the game featured grid-based tactical combat. So a number of us in the community also started it with him because why not. Therefore now I’m casually swimming through a gacha game and, as it turns out, rather enjoying it. It seems to have a fairly interesting story, with fun characters with dubious goals coming together to act as a group of bounty hunters, and with themes of human/AI identity and rebirth after death (which is why they are “dolls”) and what it means to be sentient, as well as how the AI dolls can be rebirthed with some memory loss but the humans cannot, and I will probably try to finish the main story and then see if there are any heart-wrenching, emotional stories that will chew my heart up and spit me out in a sobbing mess, as many of the good gacha games actually do often have.

In between the two, I also played a couple more demos and uploaded them to YouTube. One of them was the demo for WindStop Strategy, which was only half-translated and a bit of a mess, and the other was Cairn, which was very neat and contemplative and beautiful and made it onto my wishlist. I’ll probably continue doing these demo playthroughs and uploads as time permits now and then, as I quite enjoy doing them. Although I should also really use them for content creator practice and start playing around with video editing skills, at the very least attempting to come up with cool thumbnails for them or something.

Plushie of the Week #178

Continuing on with the streak of plushies with unknown origin backstories, here’s another dolphin to match the one from last week. Attempts to sift through Google Images to find out where a plushie like this would be from came up with several imposters, but no exact matches that I saw. And the lack of tags do not help at all. So anyway, we don’t know where this dolphin was from or why we have it, though it is likely from Canada (and thus the earliest it could be from would be the early 2000s) since it has a dual English/French tag.

Tag back side:

A nameless dolphin with a huge dorsal fin.. maybe it’s even a shark, not a dolphin, but who knows for sure. I believe I’m now down to around 20 unnamed plushies that have not been featured yet, so sometime around September or so this section of the blog will likely flip to an occasional one instead of a weekly one!

Song of the Week #155

Title: everlasting
Artist: fripSide
Album: infinite synthesis (2010)

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned and featured the 23rd of 24 songs that were currently on my phone at the time. I haven’t changed the lineup of songs on my phone since that time, so here’s the 24th one, which also stands as either my second or third favourite anime song from an anime that I have not watched yet. I haven’t featured the third one yet, but see how I set it up like this so I can use it four weeks from now?

Anyway, this song is the opening song from the Aa Megami-sama OVAs, which I have never watched, but whose music I learnt about from Nak, who brought them along to AMQ when he used to jam out with us in our daily games after our Anime Group Watch sessions. So that’s a big part of what my memories of the song relate to, since I don’t have direct memories from the song to the show itself

But besides that, my memories of this song are of walking — walking on a snowy pavement, walking through University corridors, and walking on windy spring and fall days. It’s one of my many songs that I have a mental association to wind with, and that’s a reason I like it a lot. There’s something about the song, particularly the start of its chorus, that has a quality that makes my heart clench and my lungs skip a breath. And not because I’m exhausted from walking or anything like that! Yoshino Nanjou, the vocalist, has such a nice voice.

The other association I have with this song is that of an old Asian neighbourhood, narrow streets winding past small shops and fish markets and old brick buildings and such. Not any specific neighbourhood or scene, but the general vibe. I’m not quite sure why, and it’s not a strong association per se, but perhaps a leftover inprint from listening to it while on one of my trips to Asia.

Memory Snippet of the Week #162

I feel like I meet people who stop me to ask for directions all the time, whether within Edmonton or without. I remember a few instances of them from recent years fairly vividly — the lady who stopped me to ask for directions to Yang Ming, another one near Southgate who asked me for the location to the nearest hotel, the grifters in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, the lady who asked for directions to the nearest bus stop in Taiwan, several instances in Japan that I’m not sure I documented, and so on. I also get stopped now and then by people who like my skirt, or the way it compliments my blouse, which happened most recently a couple weeks ago at Safeway too, though I neglected to mention it that week.

But those are all recent memories. I don’t remember many random conversations with strangers when I was younger and alone, however I do remember two snippets that are worth sharing involving my parents.

The first might be a snippet that I’ve mentioned before elsewhere in the blog, but I haven’t been able to find a combination of keywords in the blog search tool or my notes to actually find out which blog entry it is in if so. But apparently when I was very young, either a little baby or a toddler, and I was outdoors with my parents, a man once approached my parents and offered to buy me from them for a sizable amount of money. As far as I know my parents declined. I mean, perhaps they did accept and it was Dad who actually made the offer, and they just flipped the story about, but as far as I know they declined!

The second snippet is one I can not only remember, but point to a specific date, Nov 24 1998. I know that date due to receipts that I’ve kept — that was the first time Mom and Dad took me out shopping to buy some music CDs in Singapore. Possibly from some guilt or extra money or something since that was just a month before we left Singapore for good. We went to two CD stores in downtown Singapore, somewhere around the Dhoby Ghaut/Orchard Road area, one called That’s Music and the other called HMV.

After stepping out from one of the stores, we were approached by a lady, or a couple, who said that we had won some random contest and offered us a free trip to England. My parents declined and hurried me away with me in tow  I was mad then, asking them why they wouldn’t accept the free trip, and besides the free trip I was also probably in the mindset that winning that might somehow delay our migration away from the country, as it was something that I strongly disliked at the time and wanted to avoid.

It wasn’t until many years later that I processed the memory properly and realized that those were probably scammers as well.

Dreams

Mar 17 2025

  • In this dream, I played a scavenging game with solo/team-based PvP together with Satinel and Heg. Frotswa was invited too and almost made it, but he either didn’t like or couldn’t come due to the time involved with the quest structure that Heg decided on for our group, so we ended up starting without him. Satinel mentioned that this was perhaps lowkey payback for all the previous times he had always taken so long coming to quests or something. Anyway the quest structure did favour me, as I wouldn’t have been able to come on the other game mode, so I came on this one instead.
  • Anyway, the game involved riding on trains to abandoned train stations, looting schools nearby whose classrooms look like they were from my Rosyth school, and then extracting into a safe area outside the school. Only within the school area itself was killing other players permitted.
  • At the first train station, we moved from there into the nearby school, and Satinel and I went to start looting a classroom on the second floor while Heg searched the neighbouring classroom. I needed two more onions and two more beetroots to get to 21 of each to finish a quest, and I showed Satinel the pictures of the items I needed. I then found two onions in the fridge in the classroom and added them to my loot bag, but it didn’t have beetroots so those had to wait.
  • Someone came into the classroom when we were rummaging about. I saw them but they didn’t see me, and I hid against the wall as I looked for Satinel. She was out of sight so I slipped out the door while yelling that we had company to draw the player’s attention. The player followed me out but couldn’t find me as I had slunk into the doorway of the neighbouring class, and Satinel came out right behind them and attacked them in melee.
  • I took out my rifle and tried to help but it only fired large green marble-shaped projectiles that moved slowly through the air. Not only did they do next to no damage, the two combatants were constantly moving so wherever I aimed for when I pulled the trigger was completely irrelevant by the time the projectile arrived. One even hit Satinel in the right lens of her glasses, but did no damage.
  • Heg also appeared in support of Satinel and the two of them downed the opponent and looted them before heading over to me. Together we headed back to the train to move on to the next stop.
  • On the ensuing train journey, which was packed, I looked out the window and saw a clown coming out of a restaurant that the train was passing. I pointed that out to Satinel and Heg but due to the fleeting nature of the moment, neither of them saw that. However, while we were all still looking out the window, the train passed by a neighbouring eatery and we all saw a clown with large shoes emerging from that shop’s exit too.
  • When we arrived and disembarked at the station, there was a presentation on how the station was round and a band that I had never heard of had made a music video that circled the entire station while singing a song. Apparently Metallica covered this song several years later too, and did a similar video but broke off halfway through the circle, as the song also similarly started the same and then radically changed its style. I remarked that I actually had heard of that song before and had no idea that it was a remix of an earlier one.
  • Our plan for this station was to go one at a time to minimize suspicion. There was a food stall in the station that we wanted to visit, then a classroom, and then we would reconvene at another food stall downstairs. Both the food stalls were in safe areas, only the classroom was in a PvP zone, and Heg and Satinel both knew that I had no interest in sweet foods so my role was to keep watch to make sure no one entered, while Heg went on to scout and then stood guard at the food stall ahead which sold savoury food, while Satinel went in the middle and actually did the looting of the classroom.
  • All this went as planned, and soon enough the two of them were at the second food stall, with the classroom safely looted. It was then my turn to cross the PvP zone to get to them. While crossing, I saw a scrawny dog sitting in the middle of the corridor and bent down to take a picture of it. When I pointed the phone camera at the dog, the phone’s AI surrounded the dog with a jagged, pulsating circle and asked me if I wanted to report this dog to the police for rescue as it looked scrawny. I ignored it, took my picture, and walked on.
  • I also safely reached the food stall at the end, but as I was approaching it, I heard people complaining that the payment system was down and the stall couldn’t accept any credit cards or gift cards to eat there. We wondered if we could just convert our gift cards, apparently looted from the classroom, into equivalent generic cash at the store so that we could go somewhere else with better food to eat at instead.
  • Snippet: Much earlier, I had another dream where the only thing I remembered was a portrait shot of the side profile of a girl in an apartment, standing against a blank wall. The picture was then divided into a grid, and a bubble drawn in each grid. The picture was seven bubbles tall and four bubbles or so wide, and there were two vertical lines drawn on the part of the picture where the blank wall was, each line being three bubbles long, one stretching up from the ground and one coming down from the ceiling. Essentially one long vertical line that skipped the middle bubble. I had a 1 by 3 horizontal line and inserted it between the two vertical lines, and this apparently signified the spot that a television was going to be placed in the apartment.

  • I was one of several people travelling on a moving base of operations and many of the other people, who were NPCs, had one passive skill represented by skill bars and that levelled up over time. There was always the sense that something was wrong though, and eventually I found out that we had a spy or saboteur after an incident where a bright red and green frog was let loose in the bathroom while I was there.
  • I wasn’t sure if the frog was poisonous or not, but thankfully the frog didn’t attack me and I clambered out of the bathroom while it hopped under me and went to the far side of the room. The rest of my family was there too, and Mom and Kel asked Dad to catch and dispose of it, but Dad was lying down fast asleep inside a half-built wooden cot that he had constructed himself and didn’t feel like getting up even after we woke him up.
  • Eventually he grumbled and got to his feet and went into the bathroom to catch the frog though. To dispose of it, he stuffed it just under the left sleeve of a short-sleeved shirt he was wearing. He kept a small slime pet there, and the slime devoured the frog and left no traces of it. He then went back to bed.
  • After that we discovered who the saboteur was and instead of getting rid of her, forced her to level her own skill up properly like everyone else on the ship.
Mar 19 2025
  • Snippet: I was travelling around a wide-open area in what I believe was a game, and the zone I was in was largely made out of grey cobblestone. I had a top-down view of the area as I moved around. The most striking feature of this game that I remember was that there was a party size limit of 8 people, though I only currently had 4 people in my party.
  • Snippet: In a separate but similar dream, I remember another game world where I could recruit identical party members of the same type or race or species, and their stats would combine for me favourably as they combined together into the same party member slot. So like I could recruit a creature with high fire damage but a short lifespan, and then find another similar creature with low damage but long lifespan, and I would end up with a version of that creature with high damage and a long lifespan. There were a couple of stats where it was better to have a low number, and for those ones the game did indeed give me the lower score of the two creatures being combined.
  • Snippet: I skipped classes at school to hang out with a friend on the 9th storey of a school building, because he was doing something interesting that he needed help with, whereas the class was just a study session in preparation for a difficult quiz in a couple of weeks. On the way up to him, I stopped on the 7th or 8th floor and entered a washroom, and found that it was under heavy construction, with collapsed walls everywhere and many of the cubicle doors in disrepair and fallen over. A pile of clothes was in the corner of the room, and I wanted to investigate that, but a cleaning lady was in the washroom too. She said that I could use any of the cubicles and that she’d step out for a moment, so I did so in order to try to get some alone time, but then even though the washroom was located in a quiet corner of the building, a group of people came in soon after to use various cubicles too, including WingBenny, so I never had a chance to be alone with the pile of clothes.
Mar 20 2025
  • Snippet: I was alternating between being on a giant landship that cut its way across grassy fields, and being someone that was trying to communicate with a girl that was trapped on the landship’s crew and not being allowed to communicate with me. I travelled around with the ship, but also once per day would stand at a particular location to look at the girl and make sure that she could see me too, which was apparently a prerequisite for some future plan to rescue her that I had.
Mar 21 2025
  • I dreamt that I was travelling with two others across a city. We had different spells that we could cast, mine being fireball, and we could enhance those skills with gems by inserting the gems into spell-swords that we carried around and had about two dozen notches for gems to fit in. Upgrades included things like a larger area of effect or more damage output. At one point, one of the others insisted that we should let them cast their activation spell at a location, as that would summon a portal to an additional zone or something that we would enter.
Mar 22 2025
  • Snippet: There was a torch puzzle in a room and a code I needed to input, which I could not figure out at first, but then I eventually realized that the answer to the puzzle involved a number of holes in the south wall of the room, one for each torch, and each digit of the code corresponded to how many visible floor squares I could see past the holes.
  • Snippet: I remember a scene where I was in a classroom with Derpie, and two other Indian students, a boy and a girl, were discussing a spell that Derpie was able to cast. Neither of them was aware of his presence at first, but the boy, who was facing the front of the classroom, eventually saw Derpie approaching them and fell silent, whereas the girl, who was facing the back of the classroom, obliviously spoke on and wondered if it was true that Derpie could cast spells by touching his forehead to someone and drawing out power for the spell that way. Derpie was in a playful mood so he walked up to the girl and leaned in toward her to touch his forehead against her back, and then demonstrated the spell afterwards.
  • Snippet: I entered a music hall with Ronnie and a couple other people from work. The hall was narrow and long, with only three rows of seats facing the stage, but with easily about 20 to 30 chairs per row. An usher by the door told us to hurry and sit down as we entered, since the musical performance on stage had already started. We were only here temporarily as a distraction from going back to work though, so we were in no hurry. We all sat in the front row, and while everyone else went the shorter way around, I took the long way around the rectangle of seats, and ended up picking a seat on the left side of Ronnie, with only empty seats to my own left.
Mar 23 2025
  • Dad and I were passengers aboard a ship. Various modules aboard the ship were activated by placing resources on squares above deck, but it only sometimes involved us doing them, as other people who were aboard the ship participated in keeping them running as well. Sometimes we just ended up watching them, or watching the world go by as the ship moved. The latter bit of watching was somehow also integral to regenerating resources as well as boosting our efforts to solve a crime case that happened prior to us boarding the ship and that we were working on.
  • There were a couple other snippets involved in my dreams, one where we tried to catch some fish for dinner, and another where there was a top-down view of a game board that I was defending, and there were some tiles with pigs around the board. The purpose of those pigs was so that I could get from one end of the board to the other to attack enemies there, by chaining an attack on a pig tile in the middle of the board using a skill which gave me an extra turn of movement after using it.
