Dear Tigey,
Apparently WingBenny picked up a new Linlee duck for us and it’ll join your army mid-January! Stay tuned for that…

Life
As I predicted last week, spraying the floor area where I saw those couple ants made them reappear in the kitchen. Specifically, they appeared on the left side of my kitchen sink this time, and I saw several crawling up on my utensils, specifically my wooden spoon, on Monday. Ugh. So I did two things.
Number one, I got rid of my old dish drying rack. That thing was really old, I think I might have gotten it when I first moved into Edmonton 205, which would date it as far back as 2011, and the mat underneath was something cheap I yoinked off of Amazon in 2018. Maybe both were 2018. At any rate, both were really old and had.. dirt and gunk and things all over it, on top of the surface of the mat and hanging off the underside. Heck, it’s possible some ants were living in that petri dish of food memories. I bagged up both the rack and the mat and tossed it in the dumpster outside though, after buying a cheap, new one at the nearby Winners store.
That new one isn’t very good though, the ridges in the rack do not allow me to stack my bowls properly the way that my old one did, and the entire thing is made of wire and has holes in the side that my smaller bowls can fall through. The utensil box is also just hooked onto the side of the wire mesh and has completely fallen off and spilled onto the floor once already. Also, it’s black, so I can’t really see ants on it even if there were any. I probably have to get another replacement one at some point soon. But that’s fine since this one was cheap, and for now at least I got rid of the old one.
Number two, I bought some diatomaceous earth, food grade, from Amazon. When it arrived, I put it all around the corners of the places where I’ve seen ants in the past, around the edges of the kitchen counter, on the floors below where the cabinet meets the wall, both below and on the dishwasher, and over by the bathroom where the door frame meets the floor. And on some strategic corners around the inner wall.
Initial results seem to be decent, I guess. I’ve been looking for them like a hawk because I want to see how well the diatomaceous earth works or doesn’t work, so I’ve still found a handful of ants since applying all the dust — two stragglers on different days in my bathtub, for which I still have no idea what path they take to get in there, one on a different cabinet back wall of the kitchen, though there was powder near that one so I’m not sure how that one got there too, two on the main counter that I yeeted, and one on the sink which I drowned. But the numbers seem lower than past weeks despite the increased vigilance, and I haven’t seen a peep of an ant on the floors or around the bathroom frames since then though.
I still need to locate all the other holes they’re coming out of, and I haven’t fully applied the dust everywhere I want to yet, like the insides of the kitchen cupboards and drawers for example, because I wanted to see how both the ants as well as I myself react to the dust outside first. I don’t seem to have any negative reactions to the dust myself, so that’s great. I figure instead of killing them, my actual goal should just be to encourage the ants to go bother another neighbour instead, since apartment life is terrible for pest control as they could be living anywhere between floors or in another apartment too.
The main drawback of the powder is well, I applied too much powder in places at first and there’s little white powder piles here and there around the house. I vacuumed the corners of the house first before applying them, and I don’t plan to vacuum those areas again for a while, but eventually I should at least get rid of most of the visible white powder and reapply a lighter coat so it doesn’t look like there’s salt piles everywhere. The other drawback of it is that it probably doesn’t work once it gets wet, so there’s only limited spots that I can place it around the washroom and sink in particular.
I ended up buying a large 4 lb bag of the stuff, as this was actually cheaper than the 2 lb bag that Amazon had on sale, and I also learnt the same day that diatomaceous earth are tiny fossils of little micro-algae called diatoms. I’ve barely used any of it though, one scoop of it in the free applicator that the bag arrived with was enough for all my needs. Whatever will I do with the rest of the bag? I have plans to coat the corners of my future new house with it before I move in all the furniture but even that will not require the entire bag. Maybe my siblings or parents will need or want to use some someday.
I also bought another portable Anker battery because it was on a pre-Black Friday sale and I needed something extra to hit the minimum total for free Amazon shipping anyway. That one will be used for my streaming project, if I ever manage to get that set up. The little portable computer box I ordered last week arrived on Sunday morning while I was asleep, an hour or so before I submitted this blog for the week, so I haven’t set it up yet.
I will be off on Friday next week, so that’s nice, but I have another in-person meeting with a couple of team members on Wednesday. This one should be interesting, but will also be tricky because it goes right to the end of the day, which the usual all-day team meetings from the last couple months have not, and we’re already basically in early winter mode and past daylight savings time, so the sky might be dark by the time I’m heading home.
It’s apparently been two months since I booked the main anchor ticket for my trip, and I hadn’t really booked anything else in terms of lodging and transportation yet. Some of them I will have to wait until closer to the date, especially for things like shinkansen in Japan whose tickets I believe only go on sale a month before, but I did book the longest lodging that I will need, a 10 day stay in Singapore. This one only cost $105 or so a night, and comes with a washing machine and a kitchenette, which would be on the expensive side for many other cities, but because Singapore lodging tends to be very expensive, unless you steer toward “unofficial” options, I think that’s about as good as it gets for a place with laundry options. I actually initially booked an 11-day non-refundable stay at first, but found that the airplane trips didn’t really line up from Sapporo to Singapore, unless I cut my stay in Sapporo shorter than I liked, so I talked to the hotel, got it cancelled, and rebooked it with one shorter night instead. My trip might involve another overnight stay at Tokyo’s Narita Airport to make the Sapporo to Singapore travel leg work properly though.
On Saturday, I visited a maker’s market fair at the Edmonton EXPO Centre on the north side of the city. This was called the Holiday Geeky Gift Market (local). The craft fair was going on all this weekend, and I believe next weekend as well, but I wanted to go this week because a cold front is about to sweep in and drop the temperatures a bit starting next Wednesday. Oh, that’s the day I have to go to work. Anyway, it was a nice day out and I went and took a lot of pictures while I was there. And I also backed up the event info pictures that they posted on their Facebook page. (01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 10 11 12 13)
Since this EXPO Centre is on the north side of the city, I barely ever come here — actually outside of K-Days (and the Heritage Festival this year) I’m not certain that I’ve ever come here for anything else before. The place sure looks different when it’s not jam-packed full of people.
And the inside of the building was very quiet, from the entrance that I came in from it was almost liminally eerie how deserted it was.
The craft fair itself was thankfully bustling though, with tons of vendors and various other activities. It was held in Hall E, and I had bought a ticket before coming and showed it to the attendant at the door, who gave me a stamp on the back of my left hand. I then went in and wandered up and down the aisles, taking pictures and window shopping as I went. Here are some of the general aisle pictures from my reel:
And a few stall-specific pictures that I whimsically acquired (most of them with permission):
Ducks!
Night sky pictures!
Furby!
Vikings!
There were several exhibitions that were scheduled to take place across the weekend, and while I was there some armoured knights did a melee combat demonstration in what essentially was a boxing ring arena on the far right side of the hall.
The far middle side of the hall housed two food trucks that somehow made their way in from the cold:
And on the far left side, a cosplay thing was about to take place as I was leaving the hall:
Cool. I had earmarked several potential things to buy, including a sticker diary and a rollable d20 plush, but I ended up not buying any of those at all. I bought a $4 Rice Shower sticker from a stall/artist called TakoTofuArt, after being drawn in by this little printout on the table:
That made me laugh. Somehow he had a booth with both Touhou and Umamusume stickers and other stuff on it. We reminisced a bit about how no one seemed to know anything about Touhou or Umamusume in Edmonton, and he said something along the lines of being the premier (and only) place in this fair to get stuff from either franchise. Teehee. This turned out to be true. There were a few anime-related stores, and even a couple selling random music CDs, but a lot of the stores just sold trash from over-milked franchises like Spy x Family, Demon Slayer, One Piece, Ghibli movies, and so on. And like, the shows themselves can be good, sure, but when EVERY SINGLE (anime) STALL sells variations of those franchises and only those franchises, it becomes repetitive normie garbage that tells me that a store is uncreative and boring.
Anyway, vent over. This artist sadly didn’t really have much being showcased on his table, as I’d have loved to pick up a couple actual posters or something, but here’s a picture of the Rice Shower sticker that I picked up, sitting to the right of a couple of other Touhou ones.
I also picked up two new artist sketches of Tigey. The first one was for $5, from an artist called mejanzenstudio at a stall named Live Doodles:
This was meant as a quick 5 minute sketch, and they actually put it on a wrong postcard — they had a few out for display and I had asked for another one, but ultimately these Tigey portraits are meant as artist’s choice and style and I will always accept however they choose to portray him, so that one got added to the list as my 9th caricature of Tigey!
And soon after, one that I had ordered earlier but that took significantly more time to draw was completed, this one for $25 from a stall/artist named overlord_ches:
With attached business card:
Very pretty and fancy! She had taken front/back pictures of Tigey so that I could go off wandering around the fair with him as she drew, and she said that it would take an hour or so as there was one commission in front of mine. It took a little less time than that though, and I was pretty darn happy with this one as well. It’s the 10th portrait of Tigey in my portrait carry bag!
Those three things were the only thing I came away with at the end of the day, and I stopped by that Double Greeting Wonton House restaurant that I liked and have visited a couple times now to pick up some lunch and dinner for the road too since I had not eaten all day. I also snapped this picture at Coliseum LRT Station on the way back that I liked:
While not as sublime as last week’s headliner, I took a couple of cloudy sky pictures this week and have left them here for my own viewing pleasure.

Not bad. The skies are like an amazing palette for nature to splash her paint on. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, the moment I find a house to buy and move out of this apartment will be a pretty happy one, but one thing I will dearly miss is likely seeing these skies and the view of the mall, carpark, and train tracks below. I love people watching and I love cloud watching and this place has both in spades.
Games
I spent a lot of time this week playing Where Winds Meet. It’s great, although since I am playing on the hardest Legend difficulty in my solo world, most of the bosses kick my butt and even with NPC allies, I have yet been unable to beat most of them. They require not only learning boss rotations but also a lot of parries to beat. I get a little incrementing badge counter on my profile when I do though, and I’ve gotten 3 of them so far. 3!
But because the game is new, there is also a progressive server-wide level cap, and apparently the reason they put that in place is so that players are forced to stop levelling and do other side stuff to level up their skills and masteries and passives and a whole bunch of other systems that need time to catch up, otherwise they’ll supposedly feel too weak compared to the scaling of content once it gets to even higher levels. Or something like that. Case in point, there’s two large zones available right now, and I hit the temporary level 50 level cap without even ever stepping foot into the second zone. And indeed, there’s a million other stat and gear systems that I need to level up still
I do very much like the game though and will probably play it through at least another full week. And then we’ll see.
I’m nearly done Final Fantasy Tactics on my stream, as I spent half the week doing most the optional dungeon right before the final fight, with only the last two levels of that along with the actual final fight sequence left to do, I think. I’m guessing I’ll be done it in 3 streams or so, so I’ll probably have to source my next game to play on stream by mid-week next week!
Plushie of the Week #210
This hedgehog is one of the plushies in a box at the family home, and one that we know very little about other than it’s obviously from the Canada era of our life, post-2000, due to the presence of both English and French on the Made in China tag. He was probably from the gift shop of some zoo or aquarium or museum or some other similar place, but who knows for sure, and who knows whether one of us siblings bought it or whether it was a gift. Google has a lot of similar hedgehog plushie pictures that surface when I try to reverse search it, so that was a dead end as well.
In addition, one of the pictures of the tag here is very faded, and I had missed that on the initial run of cataloguing all the plushies that we had back in 2022. So a better picture of that will have to wait until such time that I inherit the entire box of plushies in the future. Still, here’s what I have currently!

- I went to an off-site work meeting with a bunch of my colleagues, but even though there was a chartered bus from our office to the place, most people either went by themselves or by using direct public transportation from their house instead, so I ended up being the only one taking the chartered bus there. I met my team there, but I did feel a little bit on-edge and left out due to that.
- At the location, we took part in what seemed to be an RPG and an anime filming at the same time. It involved us going into the a building or cavern with enemies to fight and various tunnels to explore, but several corridors were blocked with artificial invisible walls even though it would have been more efficient to go down and clear those ways first.
- Ronnie said something about the filming rearranging the source content to suit their needs, and nowhere was this more evident than after one of the corridor paths that we completed, where an NPC said something that seemed to imply that the story was now over. But in fact, we were only at the end of episode 5 of the anime. The pacing was bad and the order was switched inexpertly as they had missed things like this.
- After the entire shooting was done, I thought that more people would take the chartered bus back to the office and split off from there, but to my surprise once I left the room and stood outside the door I realized that I was again the only one taking this far more efficient route back. I decided I wanted to stay with the others this time even though it was a less optimal route, so I went back in.
- I had also left my umbrella behind, and Ronnie brought over 8-10 umbrellas left to one side of the room and asked which one mine was. I was looking for whatever I thought my primary umbrella was but could not find it. I did recognize one of the pink umbrellas as my secondary umbrella though, and I took that one instead, although I remarked that I didn’t remember bringing this one here with me.
- Lastly, I started to build a spreadsheet with the names of people who would be going home via public transit, noting down their names and how they got here, in order to help out with making sure that no one was left behind.

- I was messing around in some friendly PvP with Jah in a top-down game that was inspired by Half Life 2. It was an immersive simulator game and we had control of boats inside a canal maze and were peppering each other with shots.
- There was a multiple server system where we could join semi-public servers with the chance of meeting other random players, which we initially did, though they mostly left us alone. Eventually, some of Jah‘s friends from his former LotRO kinship came online, and we swapped to a 5-player coop RPG dungeon based on Left 4 Dead 2 instead.
- We were also going to mess around in PvP mode in that game, however one of Jah‘s friends mentioned that he had not completed the PvE dungeon yet, so Jah suggested that we might as well do that instead while we had the numbers, and everyone else agreed.
- Characters were locked to certain classes, and I took the backup healer character, which was a lady with a raven-haired portrait, and slotted a sub-skill from a golden-haired man that reminded me of a lion as that skill gave me a backup rez. The new player took the main healer role and also used the raven-haired lady, but specced a different way that gave her less DPS and more support. It was noted that we both needed kills on a particular type of monster for our class and that we needed to be aware and split them properly.
- The PvE map mode had foggy weather as we explored the first zone, and I remember that the first monster we killed dropped a nice +6/+6 hit chance and damage bow that I didn’t want at first as my current character could not use a bow, but I eventually decided to keep it to help gear out one of my alternate characters.

- I visited the house of an indie band member with Dad. The house was rather stylish looking from the outside, with a front door made of dark wood, but that front door was also blocked by a pile of packages and we weren’t sure how to get in. As we stood there though, a wall on the left side slid open and the guy who owned the house beckoned us in. Dad and I were surprised at the secret door and the three of us had a good laugh as we entered.
- Once in the house, we were on the person’s ground floor studio area of the three-storey house. There were six rooms in all, three round rooms stacked on top of each other on one side and three rectangular rooms stacked on top of each other on the other side, with a staircase connecting each floor in the middle area of the house. There was no first or second floor ceiling in the middle area so from there, we could see up to the third floor ceiling as well as all six rooms.
- He had four speakers or sensors or something similar set up through the house, each one governing a different part of the house — one covered the 3rd floor round room and the stairs outside of it, one covered the 2nd and 1st floor round rooms, one covered the 2nd and 3rd floor rectangular rooms, and the other covered the 1st floor rectangular room and the other staircase. This was important somehow and I had scouted all this out in advance, though it never became plot-relevant as far as I recall.
- I also had a plane trip overseas at 7:30 or 7:45 pm, and thus had to leave for the airport at 6:30 or 6:45 pm. The time in the dream was around 6:10 pm or so, so I didn’t have much time left.
- While we were at the house though, Dad chatted up the band member as they stood in the first floor rectangular room. I went toward the other first floor room, which was a studio, and located at the bottom of the stairs was an alcove with the band member’s computer on it.
- Mart had seen a couple of the band’s music videos online and had been asking about acquiring a copy of their songs, so one of my goals was to see if I could get that while here. The band had two singles, both of them with one-word titles and one of them starting with C, though neither word was a real dictionary word.
- In the studio, I looked through their hard drive, nothing that he had a bunch of folders named after fan nicknames, most of them with pictures that he had taken of them when they came to visit him. For the fans who had bought some sort of database access, there was also a text file with their decryption key in the corresponding folder, or else a digital copy of the songs that they had acquired.
- Most of the pictures in the folder were of female fans in their early 20s, though there were a couple guys as well, one with frazzled hair and a lightning bolt-shaped tuft sticking out above his head that was as tall as the guy himself. There was also a young girl, perhaps around 10, and I felt like maybe they shouldn’t have retained that photo.
- I realized that I had seen many of the photos before — they were used as a montage near the end of one of their music videos. I also noticed that there was a Dizzypixie folder with a picture of me in it, in my red Dunman High PE shirt. I had taken this picture with them earlier in the dream without realizing that they might use it in their music video eventually.

- Snippet: I was testing out combat mechanics on a monk character and found out that my “flying poke” skill was mitigated not only if the character had a physical defence spell active on them, but also if they have a magical defence one, which surprised me.
- Snippet: I was waiting on an apartment staff member to get back to me with an answer to a question I gave him, but he never did, so I took some time to go walking around the apartment complex area instead. This looked very much like the Yishun 799 void deck area, and I passed by some teenagers heading the other way as I walked past pillars and communal mailboxes. I also ran into the staff member who was helping out another lady, and he told me that he hadn’t gotten back to me yet because I was out and about anyway. I told him that I only went out because he hadn’t replied to me yet and that I was tired of waiting, not the other way around.

- Snippet: I stayed in a room with three solid walls, and a fourth half-built wall which separated my room from a busy restaurant. I went to the restaurant to sit down and eat with some friends, and we listened to a guy tell a story as we ate. I don’t remember the content of the story but it was fairly engaging, enough so that I returned to the table to hear the conclusion of the story after clearing my food tray when I was done. Later on I went back to a similar looking room as the one I started in, except all four walls were built this time and there was a telephone in the middle of the room.
- Snippet: Someone mentioned that there was a newly-promoted soccer team in the EPL which was doing very well, they sat atop the league table and their lead extended this week after the second placed team lost to someone else. I had never heard of the team before but their name consisted of a single word starting with M. They were on track to win this year’s league trophy as a newcomer to the league, which had never happened before.

- A group of friends were gathering in a backstage studio room in a building. They were all minor celebrities of some kind, with one of them in particular being a guy with a trimmed mustache and beard that played a female VTuber online. He was also apparently in the middle of producing a DJCD, which in my dream referred to a CD whose content, like music, drama, or pictures, was inadvertantly produced as a byproduct of creating another type of media.
- Although they were friends, the relationship between him and the others were a little awkward because of his cross-gender role and because they didn’t really know how to react to that. He was first to the studio and was changing behind a shower curtain when the others arrived, and one of his brash guy friends tried to reach through the curtain to grope him playfully, he got annoyed at this and shooed him off.
- One of his female friends pointed out a poster on the wall and mentioned how it sometimes flickered to show the plain wall beneath it. That poster was made of a new technology and it was meant to work with whatever was underneath it to create a blended dual-layer poster as parts of the paper would randomly grow translucent and then turn back to opaque again, but most people apparently never realized this and just pasted it on a blank wall, wasting its potential. She also mentioned that sometimes you could get a glimpse of weird stuff under the poster that the person who put up the poster had tried to hide.
- This entire group of friends had gathered for a Dungeons and Dragons style game campaign in real life, except instead of sitting around a table, the Dungeon Master brought them from room to room in the building as they walked around, since the building was a 1-1 replica of what their characters saw in the game. There was no actual fighting required, they still rolled dice for that as needed, but they did have to solve some environmental puzzles in the real life building to let their characters progress in the campaign.

- Snippet: A construction worker or city worker came by my apartment to try to arrange a date to renovate it. He was going door to door to arrange dates for the neighbourhood, and I was okay with whichever date was left over as I had no burning need for it to be on any particular day. We went to another person’s house and he said the same thing to the lady who answered the door, and the lady requested next Monday. He said that that was fine, but that she needed to sign a few forms to finalize it and they legally were not allowed to sign it at the front door, so he stepped into the house and they signed those forms about ten feet inside the house, still visible from outside the front door where I stood.
- Snippet: I was playing an MMO with ElanaOrama and around three mutual friends. We were all in the same physical room too, and were chatting with each other as we played. The game started in some fantasy world but ended up with a couple of us flying out of Earth’s atmosphere into outer space so that we could peer at a star without the atmosphere causing the star to glimmer and twinkle, while being careful not to go past the Moon’s orbit as we would be out of Earth’s gravity field and into the vast blackness of space there.
